An acronym for South Western Townships, Soweto was dubbed as such in 1963. The area began in the late 19th century as a temporary neighborhood for gold mine workers, then later became a black Johannesburg ghetto with forced apartheid settlement. In 1976, Soweto garnered international headlines with its deadly uprising against Afrikaans-only language education. The Mandela Family Museum and the recently restored Credo Mutwa Village (with its Zulu and Sotho homesteads) are two can't-miss sights.

My boyfriend and I did all our tours with Nic from Africa Moja Tours & Transfers-Cradle of Human Kind, Lesedi, Soweto, and Pretoria. We were very nervous booking tours as it was all last minute and we did not have a lot of time to research. However, our first day went so great with Nic that we booked another day. He is a very safe driver, incredibly knowledgeable and smart, and a great person to hang out with while touring the area. Nic and the tours were truly one of the highlights of our three week trip in South Africa and I would highly recommend using this company and Nic for your tours. I am so grateful we had an incredible experience on our first time visiting.

Every country in the world displays some diversity, but South Africa, stretching from the lions in the Kruger National Park to the iconic Table Mountain in the Cape, takes some beating. Enjoy the Country’s sweeping valleys of the Winelands, Cape Town’s jumping nightlife, Namakwa’s springtime symphony of wildflowers or KwaZulu-Natal’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park which alone has five distinct ecosystems, attracting both zebras and dolphins - there is something here for any person with any interest of any age. Although the country has its fair share of problems, South Africans are some of the most upbeat, welcoming and humorous folk you’ll encounter anywhere, from farmers in the rural north who tell you to drive safely on those dirt roads, to Khayelitsha kids who wish you molo (‘good morning’ in Xhosa).

I have to first admit my ignorance to the majesty of South Africa and all it has to offer. The Real South Africa....made sure I left educated, from everything from the countries history to their modern day marvels. Spending the day on safari seeing animals large and small, shopping at Sandton Mall, eating Dinner in the Sky to just relaxing poolside after a massage! Something as simple as the sunrise will take your breath away! Kudos to SA and all it’s people for for uniting as one and turning their country around after the apartheid. Not only did the Real South Africa make my trip spectacular beyond what I could have imagined they made it so carefree and easy for me, literally taking care of all the details, coordination....all I had to do was be ready! I look forward to my next visit! Until then....

There are many tours to Soweto, covering the same sights in large groups. Eenblond TOURS do things completely different. We believe in making travellers out of tourists, and prefer to share current day Soweto, let you experience life as it is lived today and meet some regular local people without ignoring the importance of past events. Your guide is well known and loved in Soweto, and also use 2 local guides to give you a more varied experience. Eenblond TOURS also supports the communities we travel in, and will take you to the NGO we support in Soweto. Furthermore we support at least 8 entrepreneurs on tour, making sure your tour fee is shared with the community. We do not support poverty tourism. Book now if you don't want a rushed experience in a bus full of tourists, but rather spend a warm, immersive day in a very interesting and friendly city. We would love to share Soweto with you over some drinks, walking and lots of chatting. Admission fees and a traditional lunch included.

Gilda is hilarious and knowledgeable! We tasted so many different things, all based on who was selling that day. Gilda is very good with being flexible, and really took into account everyone’s preferences to try to choose the best places to visit. She made us feel so much more comfortable with the city of Johannesburg as a whole. We would absolutely recommend this tour!!

Why should travelers book this tour because Soweto represents the hard-fought struggle against apartheid . We look beyond the bloody legend of the 16 June uprising and behind the hardened face of resistance politics, to core of Soweto- its people. Soweto is about people leading their lives- working and commuting, celebrating and grieving. See the poverty of informal settlement shack and hostel in contrast with the upper class suburbs of Diepkloof in Soweto.
Inclusions: Parking Fees
Exclusions: Lunch
This was an excellent experience - my guide Joseph was kind and helpful. I was travelling solo and he picked me up directly from my accomodation and provided me with a tour of Soweto, Johannesburg and the Apartheid Museum. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the city. I would certainly recommend this tour to others. Thank you!

The tour will take you to the oldest and the biggest township in South Africa. Soweto was a dumping place where the apartheid government of South African allocated the area for Africans who used to work in the mines without their knowledge. it is home to Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Miriam Makeba and many more. your guide will take you to the old hostels which were build by the apartheid government for African miners and this hostels were same gender hostels, out of 10 hostels only one was women hostel. we are now on democracy and apartheid is dead, but some part of Soweto they still experience extreme poverty
Inclusions: Bottled water, Air-conditioned vehicle
Exclusions: Lunch
