Things to do in South Queensferry, Scotland: The Best Day Trips from

August 9, 2021 Oliva Fomby

Queensferry, also called South Queensferry or simply "The Ferry", is a town to the west of Edinburgh, Scotland, traditionally a royal burgh of West Lothian. It lies some ten miles to the north-west of Edinburgh city centre, on the shore of the Firth of Forth between the Forth Bridge, Forth Road Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing. The prefix South serves to distinguish it from North Queensferry, on the opposite shore of the Forth. Both towns derive their name from the ferry service established by Queen Margaret in the 11th century, which continued to operate at the town until 1964, when the Road Bridge was opened.

Kevin arranged a custom version of his St Andrews trip for us to add multiple stops at film locations for Outlander — our favorite TV series. Kevin is the expert on the show and is full of interesting details about the filming locations across Scotland and the show itself. I’m re-watching the early seasons now that I have his insights. We also enjoyed the St Andrews visit of course. Kevin was patience and great with the children and is simply a great tour guide. He is not only very knowledgeable but he is considerate and kind. Highly recommend.

Whether you're a highlander or a sassenach, this tour has something for every fan of the show and books. Your guide cannot wait to show you the locations and inspiration for the Outlander world that Diana Gabaldon created. On your travels you will take in the Duke of Sandringham's home, the French home that Claire and Jamie occupied. You will visit Castle Leoch, the Grand Palace of Versailles, the train station where Claire and Frank said their goodbyes, the prison headquarters of Captain "Black Jack" Randall, as well as the many breathtaking landscapes as you travel from site to site. This will be an adventure you will never forget as you too will be transported back to the 1740s just as Claire was. The outlander tour contains filming locations from season 1, 2, and 3, and also from the books Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager. This is full day tour and will last 8 hours depending on traffic. This will allow you plenty of time to visit the filming locations (where access is permitted).

I booked a 3 day outlander tour for £1080 last June 2020. I paid a £108 deposit. The trip was for my 70 year old mother. It reached Christmas 2020 and I contacted Slainte tours who operate as Clyde coast tourism at Companies house. After a few weeks I had confirmation that the trip in February was cancelled and that I could rearrange which I understood with Covid-19. I sent new dates and chased for 2 months. Nothing. I received one email saying an owner (Helmut) had been ill and that they would get back to me. The former owner left the company last August 2020. This business is owned solely by Catriona Stevenson and is a scam. I asked for a refund repeatedly from February 19th 2021 as the company had breached contract. No contact. On the register at Companies house it shows the business is not financially stable and has a number of filing issues. The website shows they are part of a tourism group but again this is a lie and they have been asked to remove the logos (which they have not done). They are not part of any group that guarantees trips or money. As they use PayPal invoicing for trips, you are not protected financially. I am now looking at legal options having taken advice and am going through the slow steps required before I can take the company to small claims court (I have done the initial legal letters which have all been ignored). Save your money and book elsewhere! At least I found out before I travelled to Scotland with my 70year old mother! Avoid this scam.

Where to start? After a year of planning our itinerary with Nick of Aura Journeys, we put it into play with 8 days of touring with William. William is professional, but he knows how to have fun with you after he sizes you up. His humor was like spending a week with your best friend from college. Subtle, but pointed, we traded barbs and laughed away the week. No worries about spending a week with a stranger when your guide is William! His knowledge of the area was deep but if he didn't have an answer to your question, he'd look it up and have it for you quickly. He soon got to know what we liked and what we didn't, from meal times and toilet stops, to type of food and sightseeing preferences. We had daily itineraries but we would often adjust based on our own energy level or suggestions from William. Nothing was ever a problem for William. We went to several places William had never been to and he thanked US for taking him there. We ended as good friends and hated to leave him at the end of our journey. Highlights: * Always arrived early with a clean van and lots of water * Very safe driver * Served as photographer when asked - we finally have trip pictures with both of us * Flexible and accommodating * Knowledgeable - great suggestions for restaurants, activities, places to visit and places to skip * He did all the work and let us be tourists rather than trying to drive and read guidebooks while we flew past sights. Used one of his bikes and pannier bags for cycling for John o'Groats to Lands End and it was perfect no mechanical issues at all and the bags were 100% waterproof. I know he has a whole range of bikes and if they are all at the same standard as the one I hired they will be epic. He was also really good on the customer service front. Quick to reply on questions, he gave invaluable advice and was very flexible when I took a bit too long bringing it back north. All round epic experience and would 100% use again.

I LOVE this company! This is the second day-trip my husband and I have booked with this group - we are returning customers for a reason. The tours are always small (usually 10-15 people in a group) and the intimacy always makes the tour enjoyable and most attendees friends by the end of the day. We made a last-minute decision to book this day-trip on New Year's Eve day, and our host/guide Gregor was truly a gem. For those who may be unaware (we were!), the Scots do NOT mess around about New Year's Eve, so having an amazing day tour the day of one of their biggest holidays was truly wonderful. Gregor was a great tour guide and made the day fly by. We have been on two day-tours with this company and 100% recommend it!
