We towed my brother’s Ensign Class sailboat to Lake Murray to participate in the Ensign Class Midwinter Regatta sponsored by Lake Murray Sailing Club. We took a side trip to Columbia SC to watch regional action in NCAA Basketball National Championship. We saw Duke just barely beat Central Florida. It came down to the last 10 seconds of the game Central Florida put up quite a fight.

This park features a 200 acre lake, fishing, picnic shelter and areas, multiple trails (including a fitness trail), camping, a small two acre pond, a playground, and a very neat dock. This park has some other very cool tidbits as well, such as the boat rentals and the fishing gear loaner program. For 25$, you get a boat with an electric motor. You can also get fishing gear at the office - it’s just a great way to let the kids experience something without laying out a large investment. The park also has multiple programs throughout the year, so check the website when coming out - it’s sure to be a great experience.

Lake Greenwood State Park

Lakeside camping, picnicking and hiking. The park also hosts the South Carolina Half-Iron Man Competition each fall.

This beautiful park has a lovely lake with several trails. One of the main draws to this park is it’s history with the Civilian Conservation Corps. The depression era employment program was responsible for a significant portion of the state parks in S.C. One of the most interesting areas of the park is a simple unfinished stone wall. In December 1941, young men with the CCC were building the wall when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. The young men left their CCC posts and enlisted to defend their country. The S.C. parks left the wall unfinished as testament to the sacrifice and culture of duty of this greatest generation.
