The 1976 photograph of slain thirteen-year old Hector Pieterson, carried by a friend while his grieving sister runs alongside, is a chilling reminder that South African was changed thereafter.
The memorial and what it represents tugs at the heart. You need a local to truly explain the significance of this memorial and Soweto uprising. Hector's sister also works at the memorial. If you visit Robben Island you will also meet one of the guides that was also arrested as part of the uprising and served time as a prisoner at Robben Island.

This was our first visit. Will definitely do it again. Beautiful interesting construction with a walk through tunnel. Neat gardens to relax and a small outside restaurant with a view and decent pizzas. Great outing for the whole family.

The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting. Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country.
The building is an engineering marvel surrounded by the lager of ox wagons ! The setting is really outstanding & it's well worth a visit . There's plenty of parking & friendly welcoming staff.

What a lovely site and sight - the statue of Nelson Mandela in front of the Union Buildings. This is quite a remarkable tourist attraction to visit and we enjoyed this experience together with foreign friends.

This massive granite staircase memorializes diamond mogul and British imperialist Cecil Rhodes.
This was our second trip to the monument. It was just as inspiring as the first time. The views are spectacular right across to the Helderberg and the Stellenbosch Mountains. There were several wedding parties taking photos there, as well as two models. The photos of the gigantic columns, steps and lions are very dramatic & have dramatic atmosphere. cutest little wedding chapel next to the lovely restaurant with al fresco casual dining with a view under huge stone pines.

This memorial on Gunfire Hill is dominated by the stunning Settlers Garden.
To some the history of the British 1820 Settlers can invoke strong feelings. The most amazing thing I noted about this monument, was how the rich history of Makhanda morphed around the old history. While it is called the Settlers Monument, the Battle of Grahamstown made for a more fascinating history lesson.
