The panda experience is a memory nobody will ever take away from you. Nothing like a zoo. You are picked from your hotel in Chengdu and drive for a minimum an hour+ to the venue. Notice that an additional charge for the driver/car applies which in my case was about $40. First you get to prepare the food: you hit bamboo taller than you are on the ground so that it splits. My back still remembers it ;-) Then you clean the enclosure from the remnants of uneaten bamboo and poop (equipment provided, you get to wear overalls). Then the guide takes you around the place and tells you about the pandas there, their habits etc. After that there is lunch, quite good I must say, buffet style both meat and vegetarian variety. Finally, there was an icing on the cake: our group was divided into 3, the keeper called the panda to its house, it sat down and each one could individually hand-feed it with a bamboo shoot. Wow! Then my guide - Anna, very helpful, knowledgeable person with really good English, took me to the irrigation system. Interesting how so many years ago people could come up with such an insightful idea to divide a river to protect themselves from flooding. There are some handing rope bridges there, if you are scared of heights, you may feel a bit like Donkey in Shrek as the bridge is moving A LOT when people are passing. Since Anna was like a gini, fulfilling any requests and there was still time, for an additional fee of $40 we went to the second panda place to see panda babies (you can't volunteer there). I saw two 2 month old cubs and one 3 month old bear and this was AMAZING. Definitely worth it! Another thing worth doing that Anna organized was the Sychuan Opera - mindblowing experience. I quite liked the Leshan Budda and the tea plantation, too.
