This popular lakefront state park was established in the 1920s.
We loved the boardwalk trail—very different from the hiking trails at other parks. The beach was very narrow but we were able to access it and find space easily.

My husband and I were there today, and it was very lovely! It gets fairly busy, but there was still plenty of room to set out our towels and to get into the water without being too close to anyone. The lighthouse is right there too, which is gorgeous at sunset! There are bathrooms right there with flushable toilets and changing rooms, as well as a water spicket to rinse the sand off one's feet. It was a very relaxing day. There is a lot of street parking and some lot parking by the marina, which I believe was free.

As a person who loves history of any kind, from ancient Greece and Rome to Civil War to Old West to World War II, the thought of exploring an Indian burial mound that was built 1,500 years ago is too good to resist. Located at 5000 South 9th Street in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, at the corner of Midwood and Ridgewood Avenues, Sheboygan Indian Mound Park features 18 Indian burial mounds distributed over 15 acres of ancient woodland and winding stream. The Kletzien Mound Group, located within the park, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. These prehistoric builders, ancestors of the Wisconsin Woodland Indians or Hopewell Indians, are called the Effigy Mound People because of their mysterious custom of burying their dead beneath mounds shaped like animals, reptiles and birds. Note particularly the five deer and two panther mounds. Also Mound 19, which displays an exposed burial with artifacts. These mounds were saved from destruction by the Sheboygan Area Garden Clubs, restored and opened to the public in 1966.
