Things to do in Scottish Highlands, Scotland: The Best Architectural Buildings

August 18, 2021 Elouise Mccaul

The moody, romantic Scottish Highlands start at Loch Lomond just north of Glasgow. Comprising a slew of mountain ranges, this sparsely populated land is best seen by train on the West Highland Line. Mountains, lochs, bright heather and rhododendrons give way to white sand beaches and rugged coves as the train nears Mallaig. For a more active take on the region, hike the West Highland Way or visit the Trossachs National Park. Ben Nevis, a popular climbing spot, looms over the town of Fort William.

Beautiful location, great architecture, amazing history and the best guide you could ask for! Erik was fantastic: extremely knowledgeable, engaging, friendly and funny! He brought the place alive. Would highly recommend a visit and definitely check out the graveyard too.

Boleskine House

I knew a bit about the history of the house, so when I found out you could book visits I was straight in there. Anyone wanting to make a great day out in the area could do the nearby Boleskine Cemetery and the Foyers Falls, with lunch in their café. NOTE, if you want to visit the house, make sure you book in advance by email - [email protected]. All the team ask is that you make a small donation to the restoration fund, which gives you a COVID safe guided tour of the grounds, a close-up walk round the outside of the house and any structurally safe places at the time, with a guide who provides all the history and detail you need - I never knew Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) had owned the property for a while. I would thoroughly recommend you make the trip, the road to the property is narrow but accommodated my big old SUV no problems. The views alone are worth it!

Ardverikie Estate

I booked onto a quad bike tour around the estate and was blown away with how lovely it is. After the tour we stayed to explore the loch and it’s beautiful inland beach! We were so lucky with the weather and paddling in the loch was just what we needed. The estate itself is huge, and from what I saw, very well kept! Amazing place.

Nightmare journey caused by Scotrail delays and changes to carriages meant our first class seats were lost. Not happy but what could not be faulted was the customer service at the station provided by an empathetic and helpful lady whose name I have forgotten otherwise I'd share but you know who you are helping me on the 1027 to Edinburgh (finally getting the 1123)

Inverness Town House

Reviewed By sparky99_132018 - Barbados, Caribbean

Did a tour of the town house today. Great guides , they made the visit both interesting and entertaining. It is a beautiful building and the restoration work is being done very sensitively. Lots of original features. My personal favourite was the council chamber which is still in use and has retained all the original features and incorporated modern technology discretely . A good place to visit , took about an hour, quite a lot of stairs and would probably be a bit boring for children .
