Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia

Our building and services have won awards for design and service to the community. We trace the art, history, and technology of folk potters in northeast Georgia.

We stopped here and found the exhibits fascinating as they focused on generations of family potters including the Meaders, the Hewell and Ferguson families. A film at the beginning featured Lanier and CJ Meaders explaining how the clay is dug up, turned, glazed and fired without the help of modern machinery. The museum is located in a beautiful, light filled building built in 2006. Some pottery pieces dated back to the 1800s. The museum explains the original purpose of pottery was for food storage. When glass and cans became popular for containers after 1900, pottery became more decorative. It’s a good overview of hard-working families in Mossy Creek, Gillsville and other rural towns in NE Georgia.

If you are in North Georgia, this new art and antique gallery are a needed stop. In a beautifully renovated building, at the entrance to the Skylake community, this gallery holds some of the most beautiful oils and photos of the landscape it resides in. While their art has other focuses as well, I was drawn to the works depicting local scenes. I especially enjoyed the photography by Charles Stephens, one of the owners. I meet him personally the day I was in the shop. He was friendly and charming as well as being a gifted photographer. I plan to return to purchase some art for a holiday gift for my husband!

Mission: We value creativity, along with the historical, cultural, and environmental resources of the Sautee and Nacoochee Valleys and the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. The Cultural Center is a recognized cultural hub in Northeast Georgia documenting and exploring the performing and visual arts, early settlement of Native Americans, Spanish and English Settlers, and Slaves brought in from the coastal towns in Georgia and South Carolina. We provide 35 stage performances a year presented by local and national talent. We also display six art shows a year featuring juried artists living and producing art within a 50-mile radius of Sautee Nacoochee, GA. Our dance groups provide monthly instruction and dance sessions specializing in Contra and Line Dancing.

The Sautee Nacoochee Center was so much more than I expected. Housed in a large school built in 1927, the center includes a history museum, galleries featuring works from local artists, and community facilities such as an art classroom, a meeting room, and offices. We spent 20 minutes in the history museum, and could have spent much longer. The stories and artifacts in the museum depict life in the area starting 10,000 years ago, up through current times. I particularly liked the display of arrow heads from the various time periods. The signage throughout the museum was very informative. The gift stores double as art galleries, with all products being made by local artists. The adjacent Folk Pottery Museum has a nominal admission charge, but the Sautee Nacoochee Center museum and galleries are free, and well worth a visit, even if you have only a few minutes while passing through the area.
