Things to do in Sardinia, Italy: The Best Walking Tours

September 10, 2021 Russell Mellin

The second-largest island in Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia serves up a lovely blend of sea, sand and history. Thousands of nuraghe (stone buildings) dot the landscape, proof that people have been enjoying the lovely climate here for millennia. From posh Costa Smerelda in the north to medieval Alghero in the northwest to the lively capital of Cagliari in the south, and with many picturesque towns and unspoiled sandy beaches in between, Sardinia’s got a little something for everyone.

The tour includes a visit to the village museum of San Sperate, the birthplace of the recently disappeared Pinuccio Sciola, artist and sculptor of the stones (he could magically make them play). Along the streets, we will find several of his works and his biggest import: the murals. These are paintings on the walls of the houses they tell about the history and the daily habits of the village. Every corner of the country breathes art and culture that meet with the kindness and availability of the inhabitants.

This tour is worth doing it for many reasons! First, Kevin, the guide, is a local but has an English mother, so you won't struggle to understand him as it happens with some Italian tour guides :P Then he is smart and knowledgable, but at the sime time he paid attention to our needs. Alghero is a gem and visiting it with a guide gives it that special touch!

December 2019 We have just had 3 days with Gianfranco and cannot recommend his guiding abilities too strongly. First day was an historical tour of Tortoli & Arbatax but outside the towns up on the hills finishing at the port in Arbatax. From prehistoric to WW2 in one day was absolutely fascinating. Day 2 was a 13 km walk some bits tougher than others but always amazing views. Day 3 was on the highest mountains to look at the lakes and villages topped off by a wine tasting at a very small producer of super Cannonau wine. On all 3 days Gianfranco’s enthusiasm and extensive knowledge kept us going from historical & geological to botanical & gastronomical all supplemented by vignettes of good conversation but without becoming too much. Plus the picnic stops are in just the right places! We had already booked our accommodation elsewhere but having met Juliet too I can imagine they are fantastic hosts. Please use Go Comida and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. September 2020 Back in Tortolì we have just used Gianfranco again for two walks. The standard of guiding, information and general conversation is still excellent. The day can be as hard or relaxing as you like so don’t think you’ve got to be super fit, Gianfranco will tune the day to your wishes and capabilities. Oh, and there’s even good coffee made on his gas stove at lunchtime! Again, can’t recommend Go Comida enough.

Once at Cala Luna, a dinner with typical Sardinian products will be waiting for you. Enjoying a glass of red Cannonau wine on this marvelous beach while the moon is rising has no price. This calm atmosphere will transport you into a state of complete peace. If you wish so, you will be able to have a swim under the moonlight in the vast sea of the Gulf of Orosei. The tour underground Cagliari is an unusual and exclusive experience: hidden under the layers of the modern town there's a whole world made of caves, crypts and galleries. Must see is the Tunnel – Shelter of the Salesian School, a long private gallery used during the II World War as a shelter to the school students from the bombings. Today the gallery almost looks a mystic place with its red-bricked arcades, enlightened by soft candle lights.
