Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen

This unique spot boasts beautiful gardens and nature trails, as well as a jam-making kitchen.

We have been to Green Briar a couple of times now since we have been visiting in Sandwich. It is a cozy little center with beautiful wild flower gardens and a great early 20th kitchen which was utilized for making home-made jams to sell to the public. Nowadays you can sign up for a class and make various jams depending on which fruits are in season. My husband and I took the class and enjoyed it very much. Emmalee was the teacher and she is very organized and patient. By the end of class we each had five 4 ounce jars of jam to take home with us. Check out Green Briar the next time you are in the area and see what it has to offer you.

Sandwich Town Hall

Built in 1834, Sandwich Town Hall was restored to its former glory in 2009. The second floor ballroom and theater is particularly beautiful with its historically accurate ceiling stenciling of tan and brown paint and gold leaf. As in the early 1900s, silent films are again presented here complete with a live piano accompaniment. Sandwich Town Hall was granted a Preservation Award for Rehabilitation & Restoration by the Massachusetts Historical Commission in 2011. In 2014 Sandwich, the oldest town on the Cape, will be celebrating its 375th anniversary.

Old Town Burial Ground

Reviewed By N7776CZtomb - Worthington, United States

Stopped here on our tour of historic Sandwich to see if we could locate the grave of the Rev. John Smith who built the Hoxie House. The cemetery is representative of many of the old cemeteries that dot the Cape. The cemetery is quietly set on a small point that looks across Shawme Pond with it's passing swans, ducks, and geese. Maybe it was the time of year but I think I heard the whispering of Longfellow in the gentle breeze. How sweet a life was his; how sweet a death! Living, to wing with mirth the weary hours, Or with romantic tales the heart to cheer; Dying, to leave a memory like the breath Of summers full of sunshine and of showers, A grief and gladness in the atmosphere.
