I'm really thankful to Rodrigo for taking care of the trip organization before I even came to Peru and Maria, who was really helpful during my stay to Tarapoto. The whole crew was absolutely amazing and I can't wait to come back to Tarapoto and enjoy other adventures with you! I really recommend everyone booking tours with Vertical Journey - they have reasonable prices and once they take care of you, you won't have to worry about anything else.

We used this company partly because of my partner being from Tarapoto and secondly of him having a contact there. Never again! They stole 550 sols from us. After our first trip was cancelled we had to rebook at another hotel or lose the entire money paid 1110 sols, so we booked another hotel to only find out for two nights it should have only been in total 560 sols. Keep clear of this company! Service was bad, support non existent and then poor communication.

We LOVED this spot...it was the highlight of our trip and we are so glad that we did it! Highly recommend the experience! Our family did not do a guided tour so I can't speak to that. We were in our personal vehicle and drove from Huanuco to Huallay. The drive took about 3 hours and most of it was the Carretera Central, the heavily-trafficked 2-lane highway that links Lima to the jungle side of Peru. We went up to 14366 feet but dropped back down to about 13500ish when we got to Huallay. Huallay is a national park with an exorbitant s/2 (about 75 cents) entrance fee,. There is parking next to the entrance. You can also request a guide for the hikes that they offer...one is a 3-hour route and the other is 5 hours. Our group preferred to just take off on our own...the route is marked fairly clearly and honestly there is a lot of just open plain so it's not hard to get your bearings and head back to the entrance. It was about 40 degrees, I think...our jungle crew was not well equipped--we were in layers with a fleece, tennis shoes, and wool hats and gloves purchased in Huanuco--but we were not too cold. The ground is marshy, so be prepared for damp feet. We also took in thermoses with hot water for mate de coca, as well as snacks. The park itself is amazing! Our kids had a fantastic time climbing and exploring and hiking. Thankfully no one got altitude sickness although we were all developing headaches by the time we left about 4 hours later. We are so very glad that we went!
