Things to do in San Juan Teotihuacan, Estado de Mexico: The Best Cultural Tours

April 21, 2022 Trinity Boughner

Teotihuacán is a town and municipality located in the State of Mexico. It is in the northeast of the Valley of Mexico, 45 km northeast of Mexico City and 119 km from the state capital of Toluca. Teotihuacan takes its name from the ancient city and World Heritage site that is located next to the municipal seat. "Teotihuacan" is from Nahuatl and means "place of the gods." In Nahua mythology the sun and the moon were created here. The seal of the municipality features the Pyramid of the Sun from the archeological site, which represents the four cardinal directions. The building is tied to a character that represents water which is linked to an arm that is joined to the head of an indigenous person who is seated and speaking. This person represents a god. Much of the history of the area has been tied to the ancient city, most recently involves controversy connected with commerce and development around the site.

We booked this tour based on it's itinerary and reviews. We do enjoy an occasional private tour. We were picked up on time at our hotel. Veronica was our guide and was amazing. We went to a flower market before getting on the floating boat. The ride was lovely. Veronica told us a lot about the city it's history and culture. We went to the Diego Rivera museum which is amazing. Then to the Coyocan market where we grabbed a bite to eat and have some free time. Then the Frida Kahlo museum which is a must see. The driver was excellent, smoothly guiding us around the city. We also stopped at the University which wads fascinating. Veronica is very proud of her city and it shows. Her energy and enthusiasm were palpable. The price for what you get is a real bargain. Highly recommend

We booked a several day tour with Estigo. The owner Gonzalo was super responsive and helpful. He hooked us up with Mariana and her van Gordita in CDMX and it was perfect. Mariana was like a friend, nanny, and tour guide. She picked us up from the airport and spent pretty much 4 days with us. The price was really reasonable. Mariana will have a place in our heart and we look forward to seeing her again.

I cannot recommend my tour guide Pepe enough. I ended up getting a private tour as the rest of the group canceled. Despite the small group, Pepe was enthusiastic the whole trip and I was able to learn so much from him. Unfortunately, much of the park was closed (cannot climb either pyramid at the moment) but Pepe made an effort to describe what I couldn't see.

I booked this tour right after I saw on the local Mexican news that they reopened the Teotihuacan pyramids. I kept on scrolling through the options on this site and found this tour at almost the end with few comments but all very positive which I was a bit skeptical at first but still I gave it a go. The next day Angel and Javier picked my up from my hotel and they drove me all the way to the pyramids and I thought I was going to be a part of a group. It turned out I was the only one as not a lot of people know at that time that the pyramids reopened already. They could have just refused my booking but no, they decide to give me a private tour on my own. By this, I highly appreciate their professionalism. On the way there, they explained the history of some sites you would drive past which was very informative. They also took me to a breakfast café with a souvenir shop which would teach you about how they make local alcoholic drinks of Mexico such as Tequila, Mezcal, Pulque, etc. and you would have to take all the shots before heading to the pyramids. What a great way to start exploring some old ruins! :D When we got to the site, there was not a lot of people yet as it was just opening time. They explained the history of it and then gave me a couple of hours to walk around the pyramids on my own which I appreciated because sometimes being on a tour feels like you’re being rushed and just being pushed from one point to another like cattle going to a slaughterhouse. Haha. It was not allowed to walk up the pyramids that time because of the coronavirus restrictions. But that was okay, there are some points at the site which would still give you a good vantage point for your perfect instagrammable photo. ;) After the pyramids, they took me to a restaurant for lunch which offers local cuisine but also have a variety of western food. If you want to go to a specific place to eat near the pyramids, just let them know. I’d recommend to bring and apply sunscreen and a bottle of water to not get dehydrated like I did. It could get very hot in an open field. I enjoyed their service so much that I booked another tour with them for Xochimilco boat ride which included a tour of Coyoacan area with Frida Kahlo museum (closed when we got there due to coronavirus) and the tour guide that day, Miguel, explained a lot and was very knowledgeable. They also took us to Azteca Coliseum, the Matador-Toro plaza, the studio houses of Frida and Diego and a lot more. This time I was in a group tour, 7 of us in total but we all got along and enjoyed the entire day. My tour was in Spanish as I requested it even I am not fluent in the language yet but I understand most part and it helps me develop my Spanish comprehension more but if you request it to be in English, they also do it. I’d would say I highly recommend booking this tour when you are in Mexico City. And if you want to do some other tours aside from the pyramids, just contact them and they’d be very happy to make a tailor-made tour for you. Again, I had a great, great, great time!!! :)
