Things to do in Salzburg, Austrian Alps: The Best Shopping

June 20, 2021 Alida England

It’s been 200 years or so since he lived here, but Mozart is still very much Salzburg’s favorite son. Visit the composer’s residence and birthplace, then explore the Altstadt (Old City), taking in the baroque architecture. If your musical tastes run more "Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens" than "Requiem in D Minor," catch one of the many Sound of Music tours and follow in the footsteps of the Von Trapps.

Farmer's market located right in front of St. Andrew Church. Only opens on Thursday. You will find products that you might not find in supermarkets. We managed to buy wild berries jam, sauerkraut from barrels and etc. there. We will go again the next time we are in Salzburg.

Getreidegasse

This elegant shopping street brings to life the atmosphere of centuries past.

Reviewed By charliedados

This is the main street in Salzburg old part of town. High end brands, luxury names have all found their place here and turned the street into a tourist attraction, even without the shopping segment, the street would still survive on its own simply because its a wonderful part of Salzburg. Very ancient buildings up to 500 years old, you can still see dates, iron windows and gates dating back to the old times. Even Mozart was born here right in the middle of it at nummber 9, and I was fortunate enough to live in an apartment that was 400 years old at nummer 15, right next door to Mr Mozart, it doesn`t get bigger than this. Narrow street that makes you feel enclosed in so much history and culture everywhere you look. Here are no clutter of signposts, so screams from vendors selling their wares, it all hums and goes slowly and quietly in a civilized manner. Wrought iron signs on top of each shop and store tell so much about the taste of the inhabitants of this wonderful city, and from here you can`t help but fall in love with Salzburg. The street could be crowded midday and early night, but really if you want to enjoy the street fully, you have to wake up early and stroll all alone before the crowd hits the street.
