Very cool ruins, we all enjoyed taking a walk back in time. It was a quick stop, probably 20 minutes altogether but interesting. Definitely echo those who recommended bug spray - even with the Deep Woods Off the gnats were everywhere. Worth a stop.

Tucked in the heart of the South Carolina Sea Islands surrounded by glimmering marshes and nestled beneath the silvery moss-draped limbs of massive live oaks, is Penn Center. It is the site of the former Penn School, one of the country's first schools for formerly enslaved individuals. Penn Center is one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today. We are located on St. Helena Island, one of the most beautiful and historically distinct of the South Carolina Sea Islands, and at the heart of Gullah culture
This place seems to add more and more each time I go. Fascinating local history of the first school for freed enslaved persons by 2 Quaker women. The history continues with civil rights meetings and a cottage where MLK came for rest and reflection and began drafting the "I have a dream" speech. Well worth planning 90 minutes or so. Bring the kids, they'll enjoy it too.

Fort Fremont is a historic site. It is currently closed due to construction of an interpretive center. We expect it to reopen in 2021. A tour app is being developed for Apple and Android phones and tablets. The fort is a Spanish American War era Endicott fortification on Saint Helena Island near Beaufort, SC. Located on the shores of Port Royal Sound, an historic waterway of the Southeast Atlantic coast, Fort Fremont was active between 1888 and 1917. Learn about its place in local military history; its namesake - John C. Fremont; the diorama and other models illustrating the Fort as it looked at the turn of the twentieth century; and the volunteer Friends group which has worked diligently to preserve it, raise public awareness, and encourage the construction of the interpretive center at the Park.
Had a great last minute visit to a great historic fort. We found this place online as were eating lunch downtown beaufort. Its located right on the water on St Helena island a quick drive from Beaufort. There are information boards throughout the fort to give you history of the fort. You can also walk straight out on the beach from the fort. The quiet beach was the best part, for us anyway definitely will be back.
