Named by American soldiers during the post-World War II occupation years, the Romantic Road is a 200-mile-plus section of one of Germany's most picturesque highways, stretching from Würzburg in Bavaria's north to Füssen near the Austrian border. Along the route are many favorite tourist towns and attractions, including Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Augsburg, and Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles. Bike tours along the route are quite popular, and bus tours are also available.

We stopped at the Vierröhrenbrunnen or the Four-Tube Fountain at Grafeneckart. It is designed in the lines of the late Baroque period and is one of the most famous fountains in Würzburg. By dint of its prime location, close to the Alte Mainbrücke or the Old Main Bridge, the Four-Tube Fountain has remained a popular landmark and meeting place for locals as well as tourists, even after the introduction of the pedestrian zone. On each of the four sides of the fountain are four water-spouting dolphins which tower over the fountain basin. An obelisk stands in a base and each corner of the base is decorated with an figurative statue of the four virtues : Gerechtigkeit - Justice : woman with scales and fasces Tapferheit - Fortitude : woman with helmet. Mäßigkeit - Temperance : woman filling a goblet with wine Weisheit - Prudence : woman with mirror and book. The coat of arms on the obelisk is from prince-bishop Adam Frieidrich von Seinsheim At the crest of the obelisk is the statue of Franconia with a duke's hat and the Frankish storm flag (Rennfähnlein). I truly eye catching and magnificent fountain...
