Things to do in Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro (RJ): The Best Nature & Parks

October 10, 2021 Lean Nau

With its plentiful beaches, dramatic mountains, and backdrop of samba and bossa nova rhythms, it's easy to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro. Made famous in song, Ipanema Beach is still the place to stroll, sunbathe, and be seen. The largest Art Deco statue in the world, Christ the Redeemer, beckons visitors to Corcovado Mountain. Rio’s annual Carnaval celebrations are bacchanalian extravaganzas of feasting, music, dance, and costumed revelry.

Recreio dos Bandeirantes Beach

This neighborhood is not yet known by many tourists and its visitors are mainly locals going for a stroll on the long stretch of this white sandy beach. We always stay by Posto 10 where my cousin resides. Many bring their dogs, some play beach volleyball. There is a long bike lane by the beach which can get pretty jammed on the weekends. If you arrive very early in the morning, it will be filled by surfers. It is also well guarded by lifeguards. If the waves are too high and unsafe to swim, you will see red flags warning beach goers of the condition of the beach. You will also find plenty of beach chairs and beach umbrellas for rental. The beach is also filled with vendors selling food and artifacts. I would be skeptical to by food or beverages that are not prepackaged by a known manufacturer. I do recommend drinking coconut water straight from the source. Vendors are pretty skilled when it comes to cracking the top of the coconut and inserting a straw. What I like most about this neighborhood is that it is filled with Kiosks selling food and drinks. They all have a table with an umbrella and chairs and its atmosphere are beach casual. You can enjoy your beer or your Caipirinha ( brazilian cocktail ) overlooking the ocean. I recommend visiting Rio between May and September. The temperature will be mild, there will be plenty of sunshine, and the beach will be less crowded. I would be very careful when visiting Rio in general. Be mindful of your belongings, do not leave items unattended and avoid wearing expensive items. Most important, if you can avoid looking like a tourist, please do so.
