January 8, 2022 Esmeralda Fenner

With its plentiful beaches, dramatic mountains, and backdrop of samba and bossa nova rhythms, it's easy to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro. Made famous in song, Ipanema Beach is still the place to stroll, sunbathe, and be seen. The largest Art Deco statue in the world, Christ the Redeemer, beckons visitors to Corcovado Mountain. Rio’s annual Carnaval celebrations are bacchanalian extravaganzas of feasting, music, dance, and costumed revelry.

Luiza worked well with her driver to provide my wife and I with a half day tour of the attractions of Rio de Janeiro. Her English was very good and she genuinely wanted to know what our particular interests were so that the tour could be tailored to our needs. We had a very enjoyable tour, taking in a number of the iconic sights and sounds of a fabulous city, including their famed beaches, the uniquely designed Cathederal, the location for Carnivale, Sugarloaf mountain and the tiled steps of Seleron. Wonderful memories made possible by Luiza and her driver.

I am Brazilian but I wanted to take my boyfriend to Vidigal. I found Experience Rio on Instagram and I did this event with Henry and his wife. The cachaça was good and that surprised me rsrs because many in Rio drink 51 which is very bad.... The class was fun and the view of Rio was incredible. We even ate some food and talked a lot with Henry and his wife. The day was perfect and I was very happy to show my boyfriend around Rio because I am from SP... Ending our day in Vidigal was so fun and i would recommend all the people to come here because Henry really knows what he's doing. He is a pro!

A great way to see and learn more about the favela of Rocinha is to take a guided tour of the community with born and raised residents / guides of Rocinha (who speak fluent English). You will visit Favela Phoenix English School, which 40% of the tour money directly funds and supports. Visit to a capoeira school (Brazilian dance/martial art form) and the studio of local graffiti artist (these are often weather dependent, or depending on which day the tour is taken (they are often not there on Sundays). See many alleyways and businesses. Go to a local buffet for lunch near the end of the tour.

A friend of ours use to live in Rio and brought us on this hike up the Two Brother in Rio. It was a good climb, we met some people along the way. The view was supposed to be sublime but unfortunately the weather turned when we were half way up and the clouds closed in on us. We waited at the top for a while, but it was too closed in. The rain was down for the night. I've see photos of the view and it looks amazing. I would recommend it, just watch the weather and I will definitely try it again.
