Things to do in Reykjavik, Capital Region: The Best Self-Guided Tours & Rentals

April 19, 2022 Roger Rusk

Reykjavik bears the distinction of being the world’s northernmost capital, and for many Icelandic visitors it also serves as a gateway to the rugged adventure options beyond. Recharge after outdoor pursuits in one of the many geothermal springs or luxurious indoor spas. We appreciate Reykjavik’s open-minded and energetic culture that includes a hip and internationally recognized music and arts scene, great food and notoriously "enthusiastic" nightlife.

I couldn’t fault this tour. This was my 3rd trip to Iceland and have used this company each time for my tours. While I did think that the northern lights tour was a bit squeezed in, I have done the golden circle twice and the south coast twice (both summer and winter) and have been very impressed with both. The trip I did in August (17th) was when things were quiet due to covid. They picked us up straight from hotel with no extra charge and also dropped us off where we wanted. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, gave us extra time at stops, also stopped at a horse farm so we could pet the horses and drove up the church in Vik so we could see the view and take photos. We had a thoroughly enjoyable day and nothing was too much trouble. They also answered any questions we had. I will be back and will do more tours with them!

A memorable trip in a comfortable mini bus to the south west coast of Iceland. Rural adventure with rivers, amazing mountain view, a waterfall, lava-fields, hot springs, bird life and a small unique church near the sea. A day packed with the best Iceland has to offer. • Discover an expanse of steaming volcanic vents and boiling hot springs, framed dramatically by a range of multi-coloured hills. • The great stretch of cliffs at Krýsuvíkurbjarg are amongst the best bird- watching sites in Iceland. • Strandarkirkja church was built and dedicated to an angel who helped guide some fisherman to safety during a terrible storm over 100 years ago. • See the most voluminous waterfall / river in iceland.

We had a wonderful 6 day tour around the country wtih Friend in Iceland. As I came with my father, we chose to go on a guided tour, which made our trip much more easy, we did not have to think about anything. Gunnar made it sure we see the important places, but also took us to less visited and even more beautiful areas. He was flexible and adapted the tour to our interests and needs, but still made it sure to make the most of our trip. It was actually driving with a local, who shared all the important facts and stories. We were very lucky to have him available to tour us around and to be able to visit the country in these difficult times, which also meant the places were much less filled with tourists. It is an amazing country and I hope to come back again soon and visit other places with Friend in Iceland. Thank you for everything!

The Golden Circle Tour is where we visit the country´s three iconic natural treasures: Þingvellir National Park, where the American and  Eurasian plates have been pulling apart; the erupting geyser that sends water and steam spouting skywards; and the spectacular Gullfoss Waterfall where a  glacial river thunders 32 meters into a canyon. When night falls we set off hunting for the magical and elusive Northern Lights. Of course it all depends on the weather forecast and visibility conditions as to whether we go, so do keep this in mind. And, don´t forget, the Auroras are only visible during the winter months.

Inclusions: Hotel pick up for both tours., Touch screen audio guide with a choice of 10 languages, Use of astronomy binocular and camera tripods, Free photos of you and the northern lights (when spotted), Wi-fi and USB charger for each seat, Complimentary star map, Professional guide

Exclusions: Food and drinks, Headphones / earbuds for the on-board audio guide (please bring your own; or, they are available for purchase on site)

My husband and I took this as our first excursion on our first night in Reykjavik. Bjarní and his wife were terrific hosts! He picked us up at our hotel, and kindly stopped me by a grocery/market on our way to his flat. His SUV was roomy and clean. He is very friendly, and easy to talk to. At their home, they served the traditional Icelandic foods as appetizers. His wife made us a wonderful and delicious roasted lamb with vegetables. He then taught us to make a traditional dessert, in which my husband got to participate. It felt like catching up with friends. He was going to drive us to a viewing point for the bortjern lights, but the tracker showed very little activity. So he drove us back to downtown Reykjavík for a little tour, and we stopped at one of the famous churches down there for picture. I’m so glad we eased into our trip with this experience!
