Stayed here 4 nights on an independent tour of the area. We wanted to see how the real people of France lived and I think we got a good glimpse of it staying in a little 1 bedroom apartment in the old town just 150 metres from the railway station. Bought our groceries from the local supermarket and roamed for hours. Great architecture from middle ages up late 1800's and also quite different as you get closer to the coast and see the influence of the British style architecture. Hundreds of little cafes and restaurants and buildings of interest, from the Opera house to cathedrals and council buildings. Good to just wander, sit and take in the atmosphere. Take a train to St Marlo or hire a car for the day and see more of the coast. Visit the Abbey of Mont St Michelle on day trip. A great experience for the independent traveler and so much to keep you occupied.

The exterior of the cathedral, although it is beautiful, it is deceiving; the interior is much interesting. The interior is from the XIX century and it is lavish, sumptuous and quite cinematic; If I were a film director I will pick this place for its atmosphere, between luxurious and mysterious. Definitively a must while in Rennes.
