Excellent visit to the Sacred Portal. Very informative. Incredible experience! We were picked up on time by tour guide and both, driver and tour guide were very courteous, knowledgeable and willing to go out of their way to make us feel at ease.

Taquile Island is one of 40 islands in Lake Titicaca, and we reached it by boat from Puno as a day visit to meet people from one of the six communities. The communities alternate hosting tours to spread the income (8 soles/tourist). The trek up the hill from the boat is steep; however, it has now been paved with beautiful stone, making it much easier to walk (see photo). Because of the elevation (13,000 ft.), it's wise to go slowly. Once uphill the views are incredible! We were introduced to the Taquilenos in their traditional garb, watched them weaving, danced with them, and learned about their way of life working the terraces. We were able to see quinoa growing. We also experienced the tradition of a member of the community passing another and trading coca leaves from their chuspas to place in their mouths to suck on as a sign of welcome and respect. There was a small market with alpaca-made products for sale afterwards, which allowed us to support the local weavers by purchasing a couple of beautiful beanies for 50 soles each. All in all, we enjoyed our visit with Willy as our private guide.

Puno Cathedral is in the main square of Puno and consists of two nice towers. It was built in eighteenth century and after that various things added. The front of the interior of the Cathedral is made of silver and looks very beautiful. The side walls are full with various paintings.

The hike up the stairs (roughly 600) would be easy if it was on a low elevation town. However at >3800 ASL, it is a bit of a challenge. Just be sure to have a day of rest when you get to Puno or take it really slow on the way up. The reward once you reach the top will be worth the effort. Alternatively, I do believe that there are taxis that will drive you all the way up.

it was interesting to learn about the artifacts of this site in the museum. The grounds are beautiful and there is a great view of the mountains in the background.

La Raya is a mountain range in the Andes (snow could be seen on the mountain peaks in the distance), located on the border of Puno and Cusco County in the middle of nowhere! and is the backdrop to a train stop where the Association of Artisans who congregate in this remote area with all their many wares so that passengers can make purchases. Set amid the incredible mountain scenery, it was something different. The clothing, alpaca woollen jumpers, cardigans, coats, scarves etc were well made and incredible value (US$20 for an alpaca wool jumper). Beware however, the altitude here is 4,319m and I did get a headache.
