Explore lovely, compact Puerto Varas on foot, the best way to take in views of Osorno Volcano and the wooden colonial homes built by German immigrants in the early 1900s. Several are designated as national monuments. Located on the shores of Lago Llanquihue, Chile's second-largest lake, the village is the low-key antidote to the Lake District metropolis of Puerto Montt and serves as a jumping off point for fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and sea kayaking excursions.

If you want to feel like you have stepped back in time and are taking in the surroundings like the first settlers, then check out the Capitán Haase Settler’s Route Sunset Cruise. This unique water voyage is set upon a 65-foot long wooden vessel that has all of the trimmings of a boat from the early 1900s. The boat holds up to 50 passengers and begins its sail around Lake Llanquihue from its own private pier. It heads south from Puerto Varas, giving guests a chance to see the private beaches and houses on the southern shores of the lake. The total package includes a cocktail, open bar, music, troll fishing, bilingual guide, and if you’re lucky, a great sunset. Although it is a bit touristy and not the cheapest option for enjoying the evening twilight, it’s not often that one can say they set sail on a true colonial ship.
