The Portugues Dam is located along the river of the same name, around the area of Barrio Tibes in Ponce. The dam's mechanism, built for the major purpose of flood control, was the first of its kind in the Americas. Construction lasted from 2008 until 2013, the final structure measuring approximately 220 feet tall and 1,230 feet wide. During this phase, various archaeological sites were discovered, most of them containing remains from the Taino culture. Since its' inauguration, the Portugues Dam has helped save the lives and houses of Poncenos from disastrous natural events.
