Things to do in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo: The Best Tours

November 12, 2021 Jacquiline Darosa

Puerto Morelos, a peaceful village on the Mayan Riviera, is a place to experience the genuine Yucatan. Puerto Morelos makes an excellent base if you’re looking for someplace quieter than glitzy hotspots like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Government eco-reserve designations protect the reef and mangroves—and the village itself—from development. Outdoor options range from thrilling jungle and diving adventures to serene bike rides or moped explorations.

I was Leary of this adventure but it was the best snorkeling experience I have ever had. If you are here don’t waste your time on tours. Get a shuttle/taxi and you can find a boat right as you walk into the city center by the main dock. We had lunch down the beach at Don’s and snorkeled over a Cenote right off the beach. The snorkeling off the beach is as good as the reef. You have to take a boat if you go to the reef. The grocery store right off the Main Street is amazing. We bought waters, pop and beer for the day! It has everything you would need or want. It’s brand new. This place is a hidden gem. Honestly hope it stays a secret as I write about it. HA.

Best tip I can offer is to wear shoes that can get wet. This was a super fun experience and would highly recommend it to others. The guides are fun and great to talk too. They made my extremely nervous wife feel like she had the personal experience that she needed. They took the time to be patient and it allowed her to truly enjoy her time on the Ziplines.

I dived with the owner Dave, and instructors Alex and assistant Ali. They were very knowledgeable and good with both beginner and more advanced divers. They helped me work on my skills as we toured some beautiful diving sites along the barrier reef. The ship wreck was notable as we saw three dolphins. The boat captains were also great and Felicity was very helpful and accommodating over email prior to the trip and in the office when I arrived.

A lunch with Rosalia is an amazing experience. The whole family is involved in this affair, and it is one to remember. Learning about the way the food is made, seeing the hard work that goes into it, and enjoying the deliciousness of the meal wraps up a great afternoon at her home. The cochinita pibil is delicious, the relleno negro is outstanding and you will never have tortillas this amazing ever again. Also, there's a beautiful cenote a block away for a dip. 100% recommended.

We originally booked a tour with this company which was canceled due to not meeting the six person minimum. Very disappointing because nowhere on their website or in the initial email was it mentioned a six-person minimum was required. We rebooked for the next day with a pickup time of 11:30. We waited over 45 minutes for transportation which never arrived. We were told driver was caught up in construction traffic. A big waste of our time! A word of the wise, "If your early, you're on time. If you're on time your late" The driver should have anticipated delays and left enough time for this. Communication: In order to get a reservation you must email the company first. I thought the communication was extremely slow often taking hours to respond and even days. This company needs to work on a faster more efficient streamlined booking system like all of the other tour companies do. Transportation: Thier initial contact email says it is $15 a person see below quote, "We also offer roundtrip transportation for $15/person. Please let me know if you have any questions and we look forward to serving you!" Thier website says, "Please note that when booking any of our services we can offer roundtrip ground transportation for $10USD per person for hotels within Puerto Morelos and Punta Maroma and $15 USD per person for hotels in Cancun and the Riviera Maya" This company needs to be more honest about transportation fees. They wanted to charge me $30 a person from the hotel zone area. They need to let customers know that transportation is NOT a flat rate, it is dependent on the location from the marina. Finally $73.30 was the price I received on my invoice for one person for the trip. Website says $73.00. $0.30 may not sound like much, I'm just curious where the change came from? After all of this we were told on Monday that our $75.20 deposit would be refunded. Four days go by and finally deposit arrived. It should take less than 3 minutes of your day to issue a FULL refund not four days. Overall my experience with this company was a disaster! Hopefully manager/owner will read this out loud a few times and improve thier business. Quick recap of this company so I can drill in their head just how terrible they are. 1- They lie about the cost of their trip adding change to the per person trip cost. 2- They lie about Transportation cost and double the price when they send you an invoice. 3- When you make a deposit not all of this money is applied to the total trip cost due to PayPal fees. $75.20 was the deposit I made. $72.72 was the amount applied to the final invoice due to PayPal fees. Your company needs to go to a deposit system where you can use a credit card and there is NO fees. Using PayPal for deposits is a horrible idea. Nobody wants to pay unnecessary PayPal fees! Set up a system where a credit card deposit can be used like all of the other tour companies do. 4- Their transportation drivers cannot even show up on time due to traffic. 5. Their communication is horribly slow. It often takes hours and days for them to respond to a simple message even if they have your phone number they are super slow.
