Puerto Morelos, a peaceful village on the Mayan Riviera, is a place to experience the genuine Yucatan. Puerto Morelos makes an excellent base if you’re looking for someplace quieter than glitzy hotspots like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Government eco-reserve designations protect the reef and mangroves—and the village itself—from development. Outdoor options range from thrilling jungle and diving adventures to serene bike rides or moped explorations.

It's true. Finding "La V" open can be a challenge but I listed the owners current hours. It is worth walking by from time to time during your stay in Puerto Morelos because if she is open, you are in for a delightful shopping spree with high quality jewelry, clothing and other accessories at great prices and wonderful 'host', the owner, Vanessa. She makes some of her own clothing (I found her open in 2018 and bought my daughter one of her custom shirts that says in French: "No Regrets"--this shirt is my daughter's favorite). This year bought three of her custom shirts and more (her jewelry from local artists is really beautiful). I highly recommend a "La V" experience when in Puerto Morelos. You must be on ''vacation" time though and realize she might not be open on a given day. Like many of us, she has kids. And, kids sometimes just need us to stay home. She is the sole owner and manager of her beautiful shop.

So happy to meet the owner (a fellow Canadian) and find my young adult book set in Puerto Morelos, “Mayan Murder,” on her shelves! Bought a great chart of all the coral reef fish and an excellent English-Spanish traveler’s dictionary she recommended too.

Great place to pick up souvenirs. Checked out all the little shops. Bought a coconut carved into a humming bird. Asked if shop owner made it and he got excited and took us out back to see his work shed. Lots of raw coconuts and some tools. He took pride in his work.
