Ptuj (pronounced [ˈptuːi̯] ( listen); German: Pettau; Latin: Poetovium/Poetovio) is a town in northeastern Slovenia that is the seat of the Municipality of Ptuj. Ptuj, the oldest recorded city in Slovenia, has been inhabited since the late Stone Age and developed from a Roman military fort. Ptuj was located at a strategically important crossing of the Drava River, along a prehistoric trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic. Traditionally the area was part of the Styria region and became part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. In the early 20th century the majority of the residents were of German extraction, but today the population is largely Slovenes. Residents of Ptuj are known as Ptujčani.

We went to visit the Ptuj wine cellar following the TA recommended attractions in Ptuj and our experience was much better than expected. I was writing them an email and I got an answer the next day. They were flexible to arrange a guide tour in English. Špela was our guide and was respecting the Corona measures in distance, mask and hand sanitizer. We started at the wine cellar with a very interesting and warm explanation about the history of the place. The place is really unique with extraordinary big barrels and old ones. You can also visit the archive. Regarding the tasting, I had booked "The taste of the winners", with 5 wines. The 10 min video is very interesting as a starting point for the tasking. The cheese and cold meats plate was delicious and every wine was a discovery and pure enjoyment. Tasting the 1983 vintage was an unforgettable experience. Wine can be bought there as well.
