Things to do in Province of Vizcaya, Basque Country: The Best Literary, Art & Music Tours

July 28, 2021 Tonie Szymanski

Biscay (Basque: Bizkaia; Spanish: Vizcaya) is a province of Spain located just south of the Bay of Biscay. The name also refers to a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Biscay. Its capital city is Bilbao. It is one of the most prosperous and important provinces of Spain as a result of the massive industrialization in the last years of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Since the deep deindustrialization of the 1970s, the economy has come to rely more on the services sector.

This tour will respect Spanish social distancing rules at all times and the guide will wear a mask at all times in closed spaces. Bilbao has a vibrant, avantgarde feel to it... You’ll see for yourself straight away that it exudes modernity. From it’s origins as an industrial hub, it has evolved into an international reference point for urban design and has set the standard as a model of urban regeneration. if we had to stand out one regeneration that has secured Bilbao's place on the international stage that would have to be the Guggenheim. It can’t be denied that since it’s construction it has become a great highlight. In this tour we will visit Bilbao's casco viejo with a stop for some traditional Bilbao style pintxos. After we will continue our walk up to the church of san Antón, that is the oldest of Bilbao. Then visit the Ribera market, the biggest indoor market in Europe and walk along the river enjoying the contrast of old and new Bilbao all the way our Guggenheim visit.

Inclusions: Private transportation, Pintxo tasting in Bilbaos plaza nueva, Guggenheim day pass , Bottled water, Air-conditioned vehicle

My tour to the island of Gaztelugatxe. At the top of the island there is a hermitage dedicated to San Juan. The access is a spectacular narrow path that starts from the mainland and crosses over the rocks by a stone bridge that allows you to reach the upper area of the islet after climbing 241 steps The effort and the idyllic views of its beaches and cliffs are worth the effort. Today, Bermeo stands as one of the few fishing villages that still lives the way its ancestors did, from the sea, from fishing. A fact that is attested to by the large number of canning companies in the area and the colorful fishing boats that we find in its port. Finally, Guernica is famous all over the world due to Pablo Picasso's painting of the same name. The painting shows the suffering and tragedy that took place in Guernica on April 26, 1937. The city was completely devastated by the bombing and many civilians lost their lives. Fortunately, however, the two most important symbols of Guernica, the Casa de Juntas and the Guernica Tree, survived. The tour is worthwhile and if you have a spectacular guide like Stephan, well, the day has gone very well.
