After several years we finally attempted it and did it! Great day of skiing 25 miles. Watch out for the “alternative” route though which involves Black runs!

A perfect winter day: bright sun vivid blue sky startling white snow. This was our first experience of hiking in the Dolomites and what an introduction. It was unforgettable.

We decided to take on what we thought was going to be an easier walk for our first day: it was actually reasonably tough but enjoyable. The summit itself (Monte Specie or Strudelkopf) was a great place for lunch. I don't think I can remember such spectacular 360 degree views before. Walking up from the end of the shuttle bus in Prato Piazza, we took the more difficult route (turn left by the tiny church) and were glad we did. Having said that, those taking the "easier" route on the way up have to scale a pretty tough climb for their last part - we did that in reverse so came down the steep bit before the easier route down the main path. One thing I would say is that if my wife hadn't had a problem with her knee we would have walked back the (roughly) 5km to the car, rather than taking the bus back. That is, I'd advice taking the bus up, but walk back if you're up for it. Many seemed happy to walk up that part as well but I don't know if they then went up to Monte Specie.

I think the best way is starting from Duomo place, beside the church you cand find a stair going up till Tappeiner promenade, you walk on the leftside and you find the signal to Tirolo. You walk that way and after 20 minutes you find yourself on a paved road, you turn on the left direction Dorf Tirolo and keep walking until a signal on the left that says Schloss Tirolo. You follow that trail and you arrive at Tirolo castle through the wine road. On the wayback you can take the same trail until a signal that says Tappeiner Quarazze, going down on the left you find the narrow road (it is hidden and not much visible). After 10 minutes you find yourself on a paved road with a lot of traffic, you walk two minutes on the leftside and you find the entrance of the Tappeiner promenade going back to Meran. At the end of Tappeiner you can keep walking on the Gilf promenade until the Summer promenade in the centre of Meran
