Beautiful little chapel on top of a rock cliff; different and worthy the walk from the city. Visit is free on Sunday morning with no time limit to finish the visit.

Santa Maria de Huerta Monasterio Cisterciense

The Cistercian order originated in 1098 in the village of Citeaux in eastern France. The Cistercians founded the monastery of Santa Maria de Huerta c. 1150 and the monastery remained occupied by monks until the Spanish government’s suppression of the monasteries in 1835. Cistercian monks reoccupied the monastery in 1930. Our monastic life is contemplative, dividing the day between liturgical prayer, lectio divina (prayerful reading of the scriptures), study and work in an atmosphere of prayerful silence, personal solitude and communal fraternity. From the start, this spirit and lifestyle influenced Cistercian architecture. Like the Romanesque style, the sobriety of the lines and bare stones and the absence of sculptural representations are consistent with the highest goal pursued by Cistercian monks: «the search for God without» distractions.
