Constructed during the era of the Countess Matilde di Canossa (1046-1115,) this medieval bridge that spans the Serchio River is said to have been built with the aid of the devil himself.
You can pull up at the side of the road just before this bridge as there are parking spaces. The bridge and surroundings are stunning and make a great photo or backdrop for a photo. The bridge is quite steep to climb (I think one side did have steps, but the other is just essentially a steep hill ????). Once you are at the top it is worth it though as you will get a fab picture of the river and landscape beyond. Free to do and well worth the stop!

This bridge stands majestic in Fornoli which is part of Bagni di Lucca. The architect is Lorenzo Notolini and it was built between 1844 and 1860 it straddles over the River Lima. This is in fact a suspension bridge built in iron and stone and the architect was ordered to visit England to view similar bridges built in that way. The chain mechanism is very complex and the tension is held underground .this bridge prides itself of two triumphal arches. Sadly though it no longer carries vehicles but is mainly pedestrian. There is various folklore that surrounds this bridge and Festivals such as the 5 yearly Festone which is a kind of thanksgiving on the 1st Sunday of September in favour of the Madonna delle Grazie also the 1st Sunday in May is held the Spring Fair. There are several other events such as musical jazz events that I have attended there in the past.
