The Province of L'Aquila (Provincia dell'Aquila) is the largest, most mountainous and least densely populated province of the Abruzzo region of Southern Italy. It comprises about half the landmass of Abruzzo and occupies the western part of the region. It has borders with the provinces of Teramo to the north, Pescara and Chieti to the east, Isernia (in Molise region) to the south and Frosinone, Rome and Rieti (in Lazio region) to the west. Its capital is the city of L'Aquila. The Province of L'Aquila includes the highest mountains of the Apennines (Gran Sasso, Maiella and Velino-Sirente), their highest peak, Corno Grande, the high plain of Campo Imperatore, and Europe's southernmost glacier, the Calderone. The province's major rivers are the Aterno-Pescara, Sangro, Liri, Salto, and the Turano; its major lakes are Lago Scanno and Lago Barrea. It once included the largest lake on the Italian peninsula, Lago Fucino, which was drained in one of the 19th century's largest engineering projects. The lake basin is today a flourishing agricultural area and an important technological district.

As a family of three, we were excited to go on the 7 day northern lakes and Dolomites tour - especially as it would be very difficult to visit these areas by ourselves (visiting from Australia and not confident driving/getting around to these areas). The tour started well, we were the only English speakers but we had been assured our guide would provide fluent English commentary. Perhaps we expected too much but there was very little information provided about where we were or where we were travelling through. In fact, the first three days we received very limited information in total while the Spanish speakers were provided with much more. We visited some stunning places but too much of the tour focused on lunch breaks and eating rather than seeing the sights. Halfway through the tour more English speakers joined the group bit we still had to seek information rather than being provided with it on some occasions. The bus was too big for navigating city streets and mountain switchbacks - the driver often had to reverse and try multiple times to get around corners and switchbacks. I felt very sorry for him - he did a marvelous job but it would have been so much easier for him and much more enjoyable for us if we weren't concerned about falling off the side of a mountain. The company can't seem to decide whether they are catering to small groups or large and this has a huge impact on the enjoyment of the tour. In Trento we were advised that we would have several hours and could visit the castle. After paying for admission and entering we were then advised that because it was raining some people didn't want to stay so we were cutting the visit short - this should never happen! We then had to get back on the bus only to stop at a truck stop for lunch (instead of staying in lovely Trento). There wasn't really any point to having the guide as he did not provide much "guiding" only very limited information and directions to places he thought we should go and eat. We would have done as well with just the driver. If you can navigate your way around the northern lakes and Dolomites by yourself then I recommend you do that. Otherwise, perhaps a different company would provide a better tour.

I'm a native of Teramo, one of the most important wine areas in Abruzzo. I'm a wine & food lover and I'm increasing my culture and knowledge attending a 3y Sommelier course at the Italian Sommelier Federation (FIS). On all the FIS events, I'm able to invite my guest to join exclusive tastings, as well as having personal connections with most of the wineries in Abruzzo, allowing me to have a better treatment for our guests. As well as being an official Tour Leader recognised by the Abruzzo Region, I found Experience BellaVita, a company that promotes sustainable tourism experiences in the less touristic areas of Italy, in Abruzzo. I and my colleague & friend Alberto, we run together the experiences that I designed over the years. He has my same qualifications and the same passion for Abruzzo and our wines. 1 of 5* reviews Marino was really knowledgeable, super friendly and went out of his way to make sure we had a nice time. We can't recommend him highly enough.

I'll definitely recommend any of his lectures/tours to my foodie friends.

We have just completed our 8-day tour of Puglia with GoinItaly, guided by wonderful Gaetano Barrone. We were given the very best of service by a capable, knowledgeable and attentive tour leader. Highlights of the tour include great accommodation including a stay in a traditional Trollope in Alberobello. The tour included amazing food and wine experiences as well as visits to many wonderful churches, castles and beautiful Southern Italian towns. Highly recommend this company if you are planning to visit southern Italy.

Our proposal is the best way to admire the full moon from a truly suggestive corner of Abruzzo. Did you know that horses see the night very well? They walk calmly and firmly, allowing you to enjoy the experience in peace. A new way to experience the horse by following the flat paths in the valley, in a naturalistic context still intact and wild. The route winds along the ancient sheep tracks of the Abruzzo Lazio and Molise National Park, retracing the steps of the ancient shepherds who moved their flocks from the stazi to the sea. In the middle of the excursion, the outdoor grill is offered with products of the Abruzzese culinary tradition, organized by the staff to taste the genuine products. All adorned by the magnificent natural landscape illuminated by the moonlight.

A lovely lady called Gulia took my husband and I on a walk round Rome sampling food and drink from various shops and a superb pasta lunch. If you are going todo this tour I advise you not to eat much beforehand as we finished the tour around 2:00pm and did not eat another thing all day. We had meats and cheese with some wine to start off with and then followed this in a picturesque market square with tasting various oils and vinegars. Roman Pizza and beer were next, followed by a delicious lunch of two different types of pasta. Then followed dessert of either cannoli or tirimisu at another stop off point, ice cream and coffee to finish. Never felt so full. Guila was full of interesting conversation about her city. All in all a great day out ending at the Trevi fountain.
