There’s an Arabic inscription that captures the essence of Granada in a few words: “There is nothing so sad as to be blind in Granada.” The perspicacity of this declaration becomes obvious as soon as you penetrate the austere walls of the Alhambra and take in the full majesty of the architecture, carvings and fountains of the Nasrid palaces. Your ticket (which should be bought well in advance following the instructions on the attraction’s website) also affords entry to the Renaissance Palace of Carlos V and to the exquisite gardens of the Generalife. If you are celebrating a special event, or are in the market for a splurge, you can stay in the lovely Parador, right on site. Make your way down into the city via the atmospheric old quarter of the Albaicin, with its tiny craft shops and restaurants, and head for the Cathedral and Royal Chapel. Also plan a visit to the crypt for the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella, the instigators of Spain’s imperial adventures to the New World and beyond. It’s worth making the short journey out of town to visit the Monasterio Cartuja, a fabulous Carthusian monastery in the baroque style. Admirers of the poet Lorca should make the effort to visit the Casa-Museo Federico Garcia Lorca in Fuente Vaqueros, about 11 miles from the city centre.

"Horse Riding in the heart of the Alpujarras" Pegasus Riding Centre is located just a short walk from Orgiva town centre. We offer horse riding lessons & treks for all ages and abilities. Special ride packages include rides to a traditional Alpujarran restaurant for drinks & tapas or a cooked meal.Qualified & experienced instructors are able to instruct in English and Spanish language.
I had 3 days riding in the beautiful mountains and countryside around Orgiva. Becky instantly makes you feel at home and with the informal atmosphere adapts to what ever you want whenever possible. The trek up the mountains on narrow tracks is a different and great experience but you always feel safe. Everything is at a very relaxed pace giving you time to enjoy the countryside but with lots of opportunities for cantering if you want to.

We went to the Motril Reserve tonight and the bird of the night was a pair of Bluethroats. According to the info in the reserve these winter visitors fly 1700 kms from the Baltic coast. They were feeding on the waters edge about 10ft from the hide, 6pm, late winter sun, catchlights in the eye, perfect shot for the person with a camera....mine was at home. This reserve is also the only place in the province of Granada where they have been known to breed. Shovelers, coots, crested coots, moorhens, little grebes, tufted ducks, mallards, comorants, grey herons, yellow wagtails, pied wagtails, swamp hen, spotted flycatcher and our lonely solitary Stork Lovely walk in the evening sun and a large black cameleon giving us the eye on a reed stem half way round. Easy 2 hour stroll around the 7 hides.
