Having been recommended this tour by our guide at Monte Cassino, Danila, we read up on the tragedy of San Pietro Infine in WW2 as the Allies advanced towards Monte Cassino in December 1943 and arrived late Saturday morning to find volunteers who gave us a conducted tour around the centre/museum/sensory experience explaining how the village was razed during a 10 day battle and bombing where some 10% of the village of some 1500 (I think I got this number right) were killed and latterly rebuilt lower down the mountain after the war. We then had a walking tour of the caves where villagers sheltered and then the overgrown former village and a few buildings since renovated. We were very happy to make donations towards renovations and our thanks go to the volunteers who are passionate to tell people of the story of this tragic village. I recommend a visit if you are travelling on highway 6 about 20 minutes south of Cassino.

Very impressive building and a most interesting place to visit. We had the place totally to ourselves so didn't have the hustle and bustle like the colosseum that we visited the previous week. A worthwhile place and a hidden gem.
