Things to do in Porto, Northern Portugal: The Best Walking Tours

December 4, 2021 Matilde Konrad

The town that gave the country (and port wine) its very name, Porto is Portugal’s second-largest metropolis after Lisbon. Sometimes called Oporto, it's an age-old city that has one foot firmly in the industrial present. The old town, centered at Ribeira, was built on the hills overlooking the Douro River, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 14th-century São Francisco church is a main attraction, as are the local port wine cellars, mostly located across the river at Vila Nova de Gaia.

We were born, raised and always lived in Porto, so we know the city as a local and, since it is a private tour, we will customize it according to your interests. In this private food/wine tour we will focus on Portuguese gastronomy, but you will learn a lot about our culture, pronunciation and behavior, which makes us unique. You will visit the temporary Bolhão market and several food spots and tascas (traditional stores), while get in contact with the locals. You will get to know the stories behind these dishes: the legend of the "tripeiros", name given to the porto inhabitants; you will learn how "francesinha" is made, that "caloric bomb" that you should not miss and the tasty codfish recipes, so important in our culture. You will discover the Portuguese wines with its diverse grapes and wine regions and will taste some delicacies. And what about our sweets, like pastel de nata, doces de ovos,...? Enjoy more! Experience more!

We enjoyed our FADO tour, for the most part. The music was wonderful and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. The food also was very good and plentiful. Unfortunately several last minute reservations were scheduled and this cramped our experience. The venue was very small and 8 of us were seated around one rectangular table in the rear, near the restrooms. We could all hear the music, however only a couple of people could easily see the singer. The individuals that were seated on the end near the bathroom had to continuously get up to give other patrons access to the "facilities".

This circular walk (12 km / 7.4 mi) allows us to visit two small villages in the Douro. Our route will be towards Provesende, through traditional paths that allow us to contemplate its valley. It is a route of moderate difficulty, with an upward and downward direction, and which requires considerable physical availability. This path gives us an image of what the Douro is, with its vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees and also shows that it is a region of hard and difficult work due to its slopes. At the end of the walk we have a picnic with homemade and local products - homemade bread, cheeses, smoked meats, olive oil, sweets, almonds ... Douro table wine and Port wine are also included. Boat trip: option at the end of the program. (11 € per person)

Inclusions: Local and knowledgeable guide, Picnic with local products: cheeses, sausages, dried fruits, bread and wine.

Porto is a city with a wealth of artistic heritage, delicious food, famous wine, and interesting culture. Situated along the Douro River bank, revealing outstanding views, the city maintains its welcoming and conservative nature while being contemporary and creative. This can be seen in its streets, its architecture, its leisure spaces, its esplanades, and its shopping areas. This tour will embark on a 3-3 ½ hour journey through traditional Porto and dishes from Northern Portugal, from old nuns' recipes for sponge cakes to sardines from the Atlantic. We'll take you to typical taverns where residents and city workers eat, and restaurants with a strong identity in the old town. As a private tour, everything works around you! Our start times are much more easy going, dates can open up. It's a much more intimate and cozy experience. No need to shout over other tourists, you will have every question answered, and leave feeling like a native yourself!
