Pondicherry’s bougainvilleas, crumbling cathedrals and leafy boulevards might occasionally make you wonder if you’re in the south of France instead of a former French colony. But it's also unmistakably Indian, with colorful festivals, the famous monument of Aayi Mandapam, and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Quiet beaches stretch north and south from town, good for swimming and sunrise strolls.

Excellent old church with towering high spires just opposite to the railway station. Altar is aesthetically done. The Gothic style 100-year-old church with some rare stained glass paintings of the 28 saints who were related to the devotion of Sacred Heart of Jesus, is one of the churches tourists visit often and is a famous pilgrimage site for Christians. The red and white-bricked walls reminded me of my primary school days - the Sacred Heart School. Visit to churches is a true reminiscent of so many childhood days. Right at the entrance are inscribed these degrees: "I will sanctify this place, for my heart is here." Cheers to life!!

Must visit. It is in the lane behind the Promenade. Very serene and peaceful...lovely interior stained glass work....sit there for 5 min silently and find the mental peace right away.

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is also known as Samba Kovil and is the parent church of the Catholic diocese for Pondicherry. It was originally built in 1692 but was demolished by the Dutch, rebuilt, demolished again, rebuilt, and demolished by the British. It was rebuilt in 1791 in its present shape. The Bell tower was built later. A loft was added in 1905, and parts have been remodeled in 1970 and 1987. The church is light and bright with a simple and pretty center altar. The paintings around the church are very colorful. Windows have colored panels - no stained glass pictures. There is a Virgin Mary grotto and a beautiful silver statue of Christ in front of the cathedral. Having been visited by Mother Theresa, this church is one of Pondicherry's landmarks and oldest tourist sites. Masses take place in Tamil and English. While we visited, we were lucky enough to hear the choir practicing.
