Piran (Slovene pronunciation: [piˈɾáːn] ( listen); Italian: Pirano [piˈraːno]) is a town in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. The town has much medieval architecture, with narrow streets and compact houses. Piran is the administrative centre of the local area and one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions. Until the mid-20th century, Italian was the dominant language, but was replaced by Slovene as demographics shifted.

The church is on the hill overlooking the town and its location is superb. It dominates the town (alongside the adjacent tower) and there are lovely views over the town. Inside the church there is, as you would expect, plenty of statues and paintings and altars. It is also nicely maintained. The outside of the church is not very exciting, as the tourist photos show - it is the inside and its viewpoint that particularly make it worth a visit.

The 1274 Church of Our Lady of Health in Piran, Slovenia. This early church was originally dedicated to Saint Clement, Patron Saint of Sailors, but during the Black Plague Epidemic of 1632 it was rededicated to the Madonna. This tiny single nave church is being renovated, so all furnishings and art have been removed. The current 40' neo-Gothic bell tower dates from the 19th century, while much of the facade was updated in 1506. The church, the nearby lighthouse, and the roundel served both the military defensive and religious needs of Piran, sheltering citizens during pirate raids. The church may have tbe single most beautiful spot in all of Piran. Don't miss it.
