Beautiful temples and walls to walk around, this was one of our favourite stops on our tour of China. If you are staying at a hotel in the old walled city, you travel by golf buggy at speed, down narrow alley ways, as no cars are allowed inside the walls. In the height of summer, I think it would be incredibly crowded as this is a well known historic city, and out of season is more manageable. We then travelled from the High Speed station in Pingyao to Xian, so you could do this as a day trip from Xian. The train journey is around 2 hours.

This 9,000 square metre, private residential compound was constructed in the last half of the 18th century. It has 313 room and 25 courtyards of varying sizes. The courtyards include a grand courtyard, five other large, and 19 smaller ones. Its most famous resident was Qiao Zhiyong (1818 to 1907), a famous Chinese financier of the 19th century. The Qing dynasty architecture, wooden carvings, brick and stone carvings, and many other features are spectacular. The compound is sometimes used in movie sets. The movie “Raise the Red Lantern” was filmed here. The property is now used as a folk culture museum of Qixian County

As part of our Pingyo walking tour we went to the bank- was amazed at how it all started here in China. Old photos and relics helped acknowledge Pingyaos part in China's banking history
