The Peloponnese (/ˈpɛləpəˌniːz/) or Peloponnesus (/ˌpɛləpəˈniːsəs/; Greek: Πελοπόννησος, Pelopónnēsos) is a peninsula and geographic region in southern Greece. It is separated from the central part of the country by the Isthmus and Gulf of Corinth. During the late Middle Ages and the Ottoman era, the peninsula was known as the Morea (Greek: Μωρέας), a name still in colloquial use in its demotic form (Μωριάς).

After a pretty hair-raising drive (or a long walk up the mountain), this monastery really isn’t disappointing! Built into the rocks / cliff side, it boasts beautiful scenery and has quite a magical feel to it. A lone nun lives there for ten months of the year and so it is worth taking her some provisions if you feel like being generous.

This place is simply extraordinary and a MUST SEE if your in Greece. It was the VERY FIRST Greek UNESCO site, and that alone tells you how special it is and speaks volumes beyond words given the amazing archeological sites in Greece. I actually discovered this phenomenal place by accident when I took a wrong turn after I left Ancient Olympia, I saw it listed on a road sign and decided to give it a go and was sooooooo glad I did. What ensued was an absolutely magical drive thru gorgeous rural Greek countrysides, culminating upon the majestic mystical mountain where the site is located. The atmosphere is electric with arcane energy up there and the very earth itself takes on enchanted properties previously unbelieved, and it suddenly becomes crystal clear why the ancient people chose that very special site for this fantastic wonder. The views up there are absolutely awesome and after witnessing the outstanding magnitude of the site its hard to know what's more impressive.... the fact the ancient people got all that super heavy building material way, Way, WAY up there, or the fact they were able to build it way, Way, WAY up there !!!!! Either way it's truly an exceptionally tremendous and incredibly monumental feat !!!!!!! Birthplace of Western Civilization indeed :) It's remote, yet you'll be be well rewarded for your efforts with the experience of a lifetime !!!

This was one of the most beautiful places we visited in Greece. It is well worth the time it takes to get there, and it really isn't far from Corinth. We were there in the off season so everything was closed. The aqueduct ruins were fascinating. Don't cheat yourself, make the walk to the Lighthouse. There are so many great views, and you can enjoy exploring the rocks and paths. My daughter's dream was to cliff jump and she did it....more than once!! It was January, the water was cold, but well worth it. On the sunny day we were there, it was not big deal. Just an amazing place to visit, and one we will definitely include when we go back to Greece!!!

In the historical square of Kalamata, every year had celebrations for the liberation of the city from the Ottoman yoke. Reproduction take place with the great heroes of 1821 Theodore Kolokotronis, Petrobeis, Papaflesas, Nikitaras, Anagnostaras and many other heroes with horses and traditional costumes. Kalamata is the first city to be liberated and the celebrations are magnificent. Worth to visit the city and see that. Also near to multipurpose 23 square there are many options for food, coffee or drink.

This was a bucket list item for me due to my studies - and it did not let me down at all. The history and idea of a mans insight behind this feat of engineering and the human spirit is wonderful and to stand and admire it even more so. Even if you are not history mad - it is worth the stop to consider just what went into this canal and the impact that it has had on the region. Of course there is also some cute little souvenier shops, a great cafe with free toilets that are clean and well maintained. There is a little kebab shop to the very right of the main building (looking at it from the car park) dont miss trying a plate of the chicken kebabs, totally delicious....even if you have just stuffed breakfast down they are a must LOL.
