Things to do in Paris, Ile-de-France: The Best Neighborhoods

April 4, 2022 Hana Mouser

Lingering over pain au chocolat in a sidewalk café, relaxing after a day of strolling along the Seine and marveling at icons like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe… the perfect Paris experience combines leisure and liveliness with enough time to savor both an exquisite meal and exhibits at the Louvre. Awaken your spirit at Notre Dame, bargain hunt at the Marché aux Puces de Montreuil or for goodies at the Marché Biologique Raspail, then cap it all off with a risqué show at the Moulin Rouge.

Ile Saint-Louis

Cobble-stoned neighborhood featuring quiet shops, cafes and bistros.

Ile Saint-Louis is one of 2 islands in the middle of the Seine. Its streets are filled with 17th and 18th century architecture with lots of quaint shops, cafes and restaurants. The island is quite small and easily walk-able and a must for anyone visiting Paris

4th Arrondissement

The 4th arrondissement contains the Renaissance-era Paris City Hall. It also contains the Renaissance square of Place des Vosges, the overtly modern Pompidou Centre and the lively southern part of the medieval district of Le Marais, which today is known for being the gay district of Paris (while the more quiet northern part of Le Marais is contained inside the 3rd arrondissement). The eastern parts of the Île de la Cité (including Notre-Dame de Paris) as well as the Île Saint-Louis are also included within the 4th arrondissement.

We just loved staying here and lodging here. It was so great and exciting and fun and meaningful and pleasant. So much interesting stuff, and so much history. It is so worthwhile to visit here and to do lodging here. We will definitely return here for visiting and lodging on our soon-to-be next trip. This arrondissement is notable for the following stuff: the Renaissance-era Paris City Hall (which we absolutely loved and admired from the outside), the Renaissance square of Place des Vosges (which we explored and reveled in the amazing French history on which we were nurtured and grew up studying), the overtly modern Pompidou Centre (whose structure and architecture we enjoyed more than its inside), the lively southern part of the medieval district of Le Marais (which we loved as our place of lodging and home to traditional Jewish places of worship, study and- most importantly- food), and the eastern parts of the Île de la Cité (including Notre-Dame de Paris) as well as the Île Saint-Louis- the two islands that we visited numerous times and loved.

Our lodging was in this area, and we were very satisfied. Uniquely Parisian and pleasant and delightful and interesting. We really enjoyed every minute and plan to certainly stay in this area again on our next visit.
