Things to do in Paris, Ile-de-France: The Best Gift & Specialty Shops

December 28, 2021 Moriah Teneyck

Lingering over pain au chocolat in a sidewalk café, relaxing after a day of strolling along the Seine and marveling at icons like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe… the perfect Paris experience combines leisure and liveliness with enough time to savor both an exquisite meal and exhibits at the Louvre. Awaken your spirit at Notre Dame, bargain hunt at the Marché aux Puces de Montreuil or for goodies at the Marché Biologique Raspail, then cap it all off with a risqué show at the Moulin Rouge.

Having sampled some of the best chocolates from well-known names to smaller artisan shops in Brussels and Paris I believe the chocolates at Josephine Vannier are the most quirkily interesting and delicious! Do not be deceived by the nonsdescript shopfront with gaudily (much depends on your aesthetic taste) shaped chocolates in the window display. This is a serious chocolate shop! I am mainly a purist - a chocolatier's skills can often be judged by his/her simplest chocolate bars. You would not be disappointed here! I found some of the most interesting crus here. There are some other unique seasonal chocolate creations/combinations. Definitely worth a visit!

La Chambre aux Confitures

This is a small, unpretentious little shop on a great street in the Marais. It's easy to miss it -- but don't! Visited La Chambre aux Confitures just before closing in early November. No high pressure sales. Just sumptuously fruit-laden jams to test-taste. Salesperson (wish I knew his name) spoke impeccable English and was very informative about the "confitures." He also played fabulous music -- and responded to my query about my favorite track (Thibaut Pez's "Garcon Formidable") which I'd never heard before. Anyhow, I purchased 3 jars -- all of which have received rave reviews from my family. Not too sweet, so the flavors of the fruits (apricots, strawberries, and raspberries) are true and unsullied.

Merci

Merci is a place created in March 2009 in the heart of the historic district of Haut-Marais. Bernard and Marie-France Cohen, founders of BONPOINT the children's fashion label, realized that Paris lacked a place which would bring together the best of the world of fashion, of design, of household goods with welcome refreshment areas. A business established in the heart of its region and of its country, Merci has already created more than 70 permanent jobs. Merci is, moreover, very pleased to act as a developer or launch-pad to the young designers who, thanks to this sounding-board, can make themselves known to the many customers and international personalities who visit Merci. Merci is a commercial enterprise "like any other company" founded by shareholders "unlike any other shareholders". The founders decided that the proceeds of this investment would serve to fund an endowment paying for educational projects and development in south-west Madagascar. Bernard and Marie France Cohen wanted to say MERCI to life, MERCI to the talents and to the designers who made this success possible. It is this success which makes their generosity possible. In 2013, Marie-France Cohen passed on the torch The current Merci team has kept up the commitment and the founders’ original dream by contributing year on year to the foundation. Thanks to our clients who make this project possible.
