Reservations required!! The museum is open year round for a visit but you must book your visit by email or phone. For reservations just call a few hours before the appointment and agree to the tour. The visits are carried out only in Italian / english.
I'm not sure how a museum can be so unassuming from the outside yet is a real gem inside. There is only a small name on the buzzer to enter but what lies inside is wall to wall ceramic tiles and also displays of vintage pieces and furniture. Entrance fee included a personal guided tour in english or italian. A wonderful experience.

The Antonio Pasqualino International Puppet Museum was founded in 1975 by the Association for the Conservation of Folk Traditions. It conserves about 4,000 items, including marionettes, marottes, hand puppets, shadow puppets, theatrical machines and playbills from all over the world. Among these, it houses the largest and most complete collection of pupi from Palermo, Catania and Naples, used in the Opera dei pupi, that is Sicilian traditional puppetry, proclaimed by UNESCO a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. Besides, you can find many other objects used in the other puppet traditions which have obtained the same award: the Japanese Ningyo Johruri Bunraku, the Indonesian Wayang Kulit, the Cambodian Sbek Thom and The collection also includes important contemporary artworks, created by Enrico Baj, Tadeusz Kantor and Renato Guttuso. In 2017, it received the ICOM Italy's award as Museum of the Year.
Opera buffa is an Italian invention: it was something as the melodrama of the Old West, but played with puppets. There were several standard stories and characters (like the Damsell in Distress, with the Good Guy and the Bad Guy, etc), plus a great number of variations and new invention. This place is magic, if you are into story-telling and history. In addition to the Sicilian creations, you'll find puppets from several continents. They even have a theater, check their web site for performance days and hours. Modest admission. I wish the gift shop had more interesting stuff, but hey, you cannot have it all! **
