You can get there by car, but if you walk up the hill, starting from the harbour, you will enjoy it even more. I loved it all: the catacombs with candle lights, the guides in costumes, the light- and film-show at midnight, the amazing views. I'll be back!

Rygge church is one of Norway’s oldest churches, and is over 850 years old. It is the largest, and most opulently-decorated Medieval church still in use on the eastern side of the Viken. It is constructed of gneiss and granite alternately with reddish-brown porphyry, and the craftsmanship is outstanding. It was built in the Romanesque style, with rounded arches. The altarpiece is from the first half of the 18th century, and was probably made by Thomas Blix. Tours for groups and organizations can be organized by calling tel. +47 69 26 44 81. The peninsula’s history is thought to have started with small fortifications which were built during the 13th century. Until 1680 Isegran was Norway’s only sea based military harbour. At Isegran you will find the Fredrikstad museum where many exhibitions are held. From Cafè Galeien you can take in the beautiful view of Gamlebyen (The Old Town) and Vaterland in the south. Here you will find a maritime centre which builds and restores wooden boats.

Northern Europe's best preserved Fortified town, is thriving with history, shops, galleries and café's.
I love this place. Charming old fortress town filled with history (take a walking tour), beautiful buildings, cafeterias (try Mormor's Cafe or Magenta) and shopping (Kortevaren is a must) and lots of small galleries and artist's shops, glass blower's hut etc. A flee market in the town square each Saturday. Take the free ferry across the river to visit Fredrikstad sentrum as well.
