The British Methodist Episcopal Church National Historic Site of Canada is located in the heart of Old St. Catharines near the home of the friend I stayed with while visiting this area with friends from home. We visited in the morning on Sunday which was our free day from organized activities with the rest of the visiting group. As a historian and a visitor to the Harriet Tubman historic sites in Maryland and New York in the United Sates, I wanted to see this site, too. It is a quaint, small, picturesque church. The church has a long history connected early settlers of African descent in the Niagara Region. They began coming to the St. Catharines area around 1788. They brought their Methodist religion with them. Many were followers of Rev. John Wesley, founder of Methodism and an ardent abolitionist. They were also followers of Bishop Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The church’s Salem Chapel was founded in 1820 by African-American freedom-seekers. The most famous member of the Salem Chapel was the illustrious Harriet Tubman, a runaway slave who became a leading Underground Railroad conductor for slaves escaping from Maryland. She moved to Canada after the United States Government passed the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. She lived in St. Catharines from 1851 to 1861. Construction of the present-day church began in 1853, so she was there to see it happen. We did not have a reservation so we were unable to get a guided tour, but we could look around before services started at 11:00 AM. It was a slightly different layout from a Methodist church in the United States. There was the usual communion table; however, the pulpit was in the center, not off to the left side. Most of the wood in the chancel area and rail was a lighter color, such as blond maple. The American and Canadian flags were standing in two corners. We enjoyed our visit to this hallowed ground. I did not take photos here. Outside, the front of the building was in dark shadows. Inside, services were beginning soon. For its important place in history, we rate the British Methodist Episcopal Church at 5.0. We recommend a visit for those interested in history. Since we were going to Point Pelee National Park, we decided to visit this shrine last Saturday along with a couple of friends. The GPS took us the St. Anthony’s church which is 5mins away from this Shrine. You will have to drive on Talbot Rd E and take the right to 77, from there keep driving straight until you see the ‘Lebanese Club’ on your left. Take that left and keep driving till you reach the parking spot. You can see the Shrine from the parking itself. The Shrine is around 20-25mins from Point Pelee National Park. The statue is made of white carrara marble, is 145 feet high and weighing 12 tons. It sits on a conical base of concrete 42 feet in height and totalling just under 60 feet with a spiralling staircase to allow accessibility. Apparently, this is a replica of Our Lady of Lebanon Shrine in Harissa, Lebanon. The Mother Mary’s statue at the top of the tower is simply majestic and beautiful. You can climb the winding staircase to get to the top and the view from there is amazing. At the bottom, there is a door that leads to a small chapel where you can pray in complete silence. As you exit the chapel, on the right side there is holy water which you can take for a meagre donation. The shrine is surrounded with 14 stations of the cross that have been carved on huge boulders of rocks. In between there is a lotus pond and looks wonderful. I have never seen a lotus pond in Canada and this as a surprise to us all. A definite must visit. We loved the place and will definitely visit again if we get the chance to.

This beautiful and ornate gothic-style cathedral is recognized by its twin spires.
Not being religious we still wanted to see Notre Dame and were not disappointed. The building is old and spectacular and reverential. We were lucky in that the Basilica was hosting a female choir at the time so we had the pleasure of exploring the marvelous stained glass windows and ornate columns whilst listening to their pleasant singing. There was a queue to get in and we had to wait 20 minutes to get in but it was well worth it.

The city's oldest Anglican church is located in a beautiful park-like setting.
Whether attending a service here or not, it is a very well worth while visit to admire the intricate detail both inside and out

This beautiful gothic-style cathedral is one of the city's most prominent landmarks.
Beautiful Cathedral Church in the English Gothic Revival Style, built in 1848. This beautiful building is full of character and detail amongst plain glass and flat stone and composite buildings surrounding it. Its remarkable both in and out.
