We were a family of four that had never tried stand up paddle boards. Our waitress Cathy at Howard's Pub recommended Ride the Wind surf shop down the street in Ocracoke. Robert and Jesse gave us the lowdown on board rentals. $20.00 per hour. Other longer term rates available. We parked at the shop. Their dock is across the street - very convenient. Jesse outfitted us with life jackets, paddles and a board. None of us had formal training on the boards - only from watching videos and other boarders. We were able to climb on the boards and stand up. It took 5 - 10 minutes acclimation for balancing skills to kick in. For me it helped to focus on the horizon. In one hour we paddled around Silver Lake and out to Pamlico Sound towards the light house. Our round trip was an hour. Just enough for us. Ride the Wind on Silver Lake Harbor is an excellent intro to Stand Up Paddle boarding - I would recommend for anyone thinking of trying it out for the first time, or accomplished paddlers.

Our family of 4 rented a golf cart from here. The owners and staff are some of the most friendliest people you'll meet on the island. They make you feel right at home and have you in a golf cart in less than 5 min. They have parking for your vehicle right behind the rental hut. Very convenient to rent from here since it is located just as you enter Ocracoke village on the left side of the road. We definitely have found our permanent golf cart rental place whenever we visit Ocracoke.

Because we were staying on the island for two weeks, they delivered the golf cart to our rental home and picked it back up. Very easy to work with, and super nice staff! This is the best way to navigate the island. You need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to drive on the beach, but the golf carts are great for the village! Once in a while, my husband would go fishing on the beach (in our 4-wheel drive Tahoe) and I'd take the golf cart into the village to do some shopping! Worked out great! We took the golf cart all over the village exploring! They're fun!

Very close to the lodge we were staying at so we were able to walk to it. Everyone was amazing and it took all of 7 minutes to get there pay and be on our way enjoying the island. We did rent the cart for 24 hours for $75. That is the going rate at all of the rental companies on the island. The carts come with headlights so you can drive around at night. What impressed me the most is that without me knowing or saying everything the lady got us a gas powered one because she was not sure if our lodge had fixed their hookups for more juice when needed.
