Things to do in Nuremberg, Bavaria: The Best Private Tours

May 11, 2022 Enedina Augsburger

With half a million people, Nuremberg is Bavaria's second largest city. While its history dates to the 11th century, Nuremberg is most often linked to the 20th century (specifically World War II). It first served as the site of many pre-war Nazi rallies, then was nearly leveled by Allied bombing, then was the site of the famous post-war Nuremberg Trials. The city has much to offer today's visitors, including the rebuilt Nuremberg Castle and the world-famous gingerbread at Hauptmarkt. Hansel and Gretel would have loved this place.

Martin Luther is NOT the same historical figure as MARTIN LUTHER KING Jr. Germany is not the same nation as the US. Martin Luther was the great GERMAN reformer of the 1500s. Martin Luther King Jr. was the great civil rights American reformer of the 1960s. I keep trying to help this organization, but they don't seem to worry about trivia like historical facts.

On March 22, 1933, a few weeks after Adolf Hitler had been appointed Reich Chancellor, a concentration camp for political prisoners was set up in Dachau. This camp served as a model for all later concentration camps and as a "school of violence" for the SS men under whose command it stood. In the twelve years of its existence over 200. 000 persons from all over Europe were imprisoned here and in the numerous subsidary camps. 41. 500 were murdered. On April 29 1945, American troops liberated the survivors.

This tour begins in front of Nuremberg Central Station. Meet the guide and the rest of the tour group and roam through the city’s Old Town, admiring the beautiful timber-framed houses and cobblestone streets. Marvel at the massive City Walls of Old Town Nuremberg, which still run for approximately four kilometers. Behind the walls, walk past the Craftsmen's Courtyard, where glass cutters, leather workers, gold and silversmiths, stained-glass painters and other artisans offer their wares for sale. See the gothic St. Lawrence Church, which was rebuilt after World War II; Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt, Germany’s most famous Christmas market; plus Town Hall, German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer's house and the Imperial Castle courtyards, to name just some of the attractions.

We did a private Nazi Party Grounds tour and found it to be extremely interesting and captivating. Kevin is very knowledgeable about Nazi party history and also shared some behind the scenes information which you would not normally hear about in a large guided tour. Kevin was also very amenable to both walking and driving as the weather changed dramatically during our time together. We learned a lot and will definitely take future tours with Kevin. Highly recommend!!

Still to this day, in the southeast corner of Nuremberg, the remains of structures located on the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds impress visitors with their immense proportions and stand as vivid testimony to the megalomania of the National Socialist regime. Adolf Dassler (known as "Adi") began producing his own sports shoes in the kitchen of his mother's house in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria after his return from World War I. In 1927. During the 1936 Summer Olympics, Adi Dassler headed from Bavaria to the Olympic Village to convince African-American sprinter Jesse Owens to wear his shoes. Owens was the first African American athlete to be sponsored by the Dassler brothers. When the sprinter was awarded four gold medals, success confirmed the reputation of Dassler shoes among the most famous sportsmen in the world, piquing the interest of coaches from various national teams.
