A very moving memorial to a tragic event. There is a large parking area with a pleasant walkway to the memorial. An information board is located in the parking area giving all the details you need to know. The memorial is simple and tasteful, located on a beautiful shelf of rock, and the views out to sea and to Peggy's Cove are magnificent. Its worthwhile to ponder on the event and how short life can be for some. Well worth the stop.

This Sydney Merchant Mariners Memorial is not jost an impressive monument but also a very important one. The monument tells the heroic story of the sailors on merchant ships carrying equipment and supplies to the Allied forces in Europe during WWII.

More than 65 years ago my father, a WWII vet, was stationed in Halifax. He not returned since but remembered this statue and asked me to see if it is still standing ...... a proud Canadian sailor!

"Dr. Apple" is a sculpture of Eaves. The sculpture consists of the bronze figure, apple barrels and stacked apple crates. The barrels and crates have inscribed plates describing Eaves' research. The sculpture was commissioned by Allen Eaves to commemorate his father's work at the Kentville Agriculture Centre that extended the storage life of apples and other fruit.
Nice place to stop and from here I walked along the Harvest Moon trailway into downtown Kentville and back to the car. Eaves Hollow park is located just at the border between the towns of Kentville and New Minas. The Kentville Agricultural Station is located just across the road from this park. Btw I have driven into the KAS to look at the beautiful rhododendrons in June. There is no charge to drive in. It was interesting to see the statue of Charles Eaves in Eaves Hollow park. He was a Canadian scientist who worked at the KAS and he extended the storage of apples by controlling levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide. His research established storage methods that were adopted worldwide. Eaves Hollow park has a parking lot, a picnic table and tools for fixing your bike.

Peaceful location for the park with some wonderful trees growing. This monument included lots of information including what the ships carried that caused the enormous explosion and also pieces of the ship were also used when creating this memorial. A wonderful poem is etched into metal with the sunlight shining through. Parking available. The side streets are very hilly to drive on. Go in the evening when the park is quiet and after rush hour. Some teens were smoking behind the memorial, so not very respectful of this tragic event. A must to visit and its free. Easy to find, just program it in your GPS.
