The Maison du Fier is a museum about nature on the Ile de Ré. It is hosted in an ancient salt shed. Nature guides welcomes you at this building where you can discover and learn about nature on the Ile de Ré. Why are birds banded? Which fish are hidden in our aquarium? Discover the answers to these questions and learn more thanks to the exhibition and our English audio guides. The access to the outside track is free all year round and you can discover a great variety of species! From there you can also start you exploration on the walking or cycling tracks along the edge of the Nature Reserve Lilleau des Niges. Visited the museum after going to several caves and spent several hours there. Informative, educational and interesting displays of their extensive collection of bones, tools, jewellery, examples of cave art and how tools etc., developed through periods of pre history. The rooms have plastic coated information sheets in English for the artefacts in the cabinets. We visited when the outside temperature was 38-41 C. The rooms are air conditioned, which was a bonus. Keep your ticket and when outside, follow the signs for the guided tour of the adjacent excavation site which is where many of the artefacts were found. Your museum ticket gets you a discount, the tours start on the hour (may be a gap for lunch) and last for about 45 minutes. Our guide spoke excellent English, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It's an impressive excavation site, although it can get very warm. However, there's an adjacent air conditioned room with more artefacts to finish the tour.
