You can get there by car, but if you walk up the hill, starting from the harbour, you will enjoy it even more. I loved it all: the catacombs with candle lights, the guides in costumes, the light- and film-show at midnight, the amazing views. I'll be back!

Kvalvik Fort is situated on Kvalvik, Frei. It is one of Norway's best preserved coastal fortifications from the Second World War. There was also a submarine station here during the war. The fort is still intact and many people spend a long time exploring the bunker, canons and other objects from the war. Through agreement with the cultural office, guided trips in various languages are offered. The area is maintained by the municipality in close cooperation with Kvalvik Fort's Friends. The fort has a beautiful location and is a great spot for fishing and barbecuing. The area is well adjusted for wheelchair users. Several information boards.

The building from 1921 was originally a school home for “difficult” boys. During World War 2 the nazis seized the property as a prison camp. The SS Strafgefangenenlager Falstad was the only camp in Norway directly under SS commando. More than 4.200 people from 15 nations were imprisonated here during the war, and around 200 were executed in the Falstad forest close by. Today Falstad is a war memorial, a human rights centre and a education and research centre. There are several exhibitions open for the audience, and we also offer hotel and conference service.

It was the northernmost part of Germany’s Atlantic Wall until 1944, at which point it was abandoned because of the approaching Soviet army. Kiberg was furnished with super heavy batteries – 3 280 mm naval guns. The fortress is situated at Kibergsneset – which is also the easternmost point of Norway’s mainland.
