Mount Meron Nature Reserve is the largest in northern Israel. Lofty hills and mountains, dense shrubbery, indigenous flora and fauna, springs, caves and observation points – all these await you in the Merom Hagalil region of the Upper Galilee.

Lake Ram is a crater lake in northeastern Israel, in the Golan Heights, near Mount Hermon. The only sources of the lake are rain water and an underground spring. The water does not leave the lake to any other body of water. The crater is a maar (extinct volcano crater filled with water).
Recently, my son and I travelled up to the northeast tip of Israel and hiked up the highest mountain in Israel – Mount Hermon, 2,200 meters/7,000 feet high. We started at the bottom near the Druze village of Ma’sada on highway 98 near the Odem Forest. We hiked for about a kilometer and a half, passing apple orchards where one of the famers let us pick some delicious Hermon apples, until we came upon Birkat Ram (Ram’s lake), a lake in the center of an extinct volcano (known as a “maar”, and this one is one of the world’s most well-known maars) with Mount Hermon rising majestically in the background. We found a rest spot with one of the best views in all of Israel (see the pictures I posted). In one eyeful, one can see our whole hike - the Lake, the northern Golan Heights and the majestic Mount Hermon. For those looking for an easier adventure, it’s possible to hike on hiking trails around the whole lake and is definitely worth it! On the west side of the lake is the famous Golan Trail and on the east side of the lake is a “green” trail (white-green-white markers), both of which join together at the southern end of the lake. Don’t visit the area without visiting this lake!
