A miniature railway running for over half a mile in a lovely recently restored park. Rides are only £1 per person. We also have three special events where some rides are free. Check our webpage or facebook site (Thompsonparkrailway). A new car park should open soon from Colne Road.
We had our little boys 6th birthday party on the railway yesterday. It was absolutely fantastic. The volunteers did a smashing job and made sure everyone had a blast. I can't recommend the experience high enough. All the guests had a great time, and it was something different in terms of a party. Give it a go, you won't regret it!

Located in Bury, just 30 minutes from Manchester City Centre, is the award-winning East Lancashire Railway. A heritage railway that runs steam and diesel train services through the beautiful Pennine Lancashire scenery. There are plenty of things to see and do and stations are well equipped for group visits with cafes, pubs, gift shops and a dedicated Transport Museum, housing vintage vehicles, transport memorabilia and interactive exhibits. Guided tours and talks are also available. The railway also has some fantastic events scheduled throughout the year from guided Rail Ale Trail tours of some of the excellent local drinking spots to the nostalgia of their award winning 1940's weekend. Looking for something a little different? Why not indulge in a luxury steam train hauled dining experience on board Orient Express style carriages, learn to drive a train or get snap happy with a Photography Course?
This is an afternoon 3 course dinner in Pullman carriages ( similar to the Orient express) 2 1/2 hours on board over the full length of the East Lancashire railway in finest Lancashier countryside. ELR owned real ale pubs at both Bury and Rawtenstall, We had a 3 course meal with duck breast as the main course .Every course is correctly desribed as fine dining. If want want luxury without breaking the bank this is for you. We were made to feel like VIPs for the afternoon, This is only one of the many offering You must see their website there are Thomas the Tank Engine, Santa Express, Murder Mystery Ale Trail Makes me proud to be a lancastrian and tell the world about it. PS THe new statue to Victoria Wood and an exhibition in her name in on at the Art Gallery around the corner

We are next open Saturday 10th October. To visit, please book in advance through www.ribblesteamtickets.co.uk Preston’s old Industrial Docklands and has been greeting visitors since 2005. We have a committed team of enthusiastic volunteers ready to help you during your visit whether its sharing our extensive and varied knowledge of our engines or the explaining the inner workings of our steam and diesel engines we are all here and happy to help.
We were a group of five adults two babies and a three year old. We all really enjoyed the experience. 55 minute steam train ride, long enough for kiddies as no loos on board. The wonderful staff, mainly give up their own time to provide this unique service. How wonderful to speak to so many enthusiastic people! Santa was fab and with a real beard and real wife???? the train museum was really cool too. We're going to make this an annual trip as long as it keeps going as it's run on a shoestring.

We travelled on the Jacobite train from fort William to Mallaig and the whole experience was fantastic. The additional Covid measures mean that you feel really safe. Afternoon tea is well worth the money. Very fresh and tasty. Staff were first class. So friendly and focused on making the journey as special as they could. The actual journey itself was great and we loved Mallaig. Overall this trip is great value for money and I would recommend. We were in first class and it was worth every penny.

Yesterday,, I had bought a cheap advance ticket. Avivia having recently taken over from Virgin, I was not sure that the Saturday upgrade of £20 to travle first class to Euston would apply. I asked at the information desk and was very courteously treated. On the platform I wanted to know where the 1st Class com, partments wouldbe, and again was courteously helped. Finally, I checked again with another guard and was couteously and fully helped. I have to say that at nearly 80, I rember the surly, unpleasant and deliberately misleading British Railway staff of the Nationalised railways and the contrast is extreme. One can now even hear and grasp the words put out over the tannoy.

This train station has 6 platforms including a platform 0.The main entrance at the front has the booking office, this entrance is fully accessible to wheelchair users. At that entrance their is a cash machine and a small cafe. There is a taxi rank, and a blue plaque to ww2 evacuated children. There is also a entrance to the rear with car parking which private hire taxis pick people up from. In one of the connecting tunnels is old post box which you can post letters from. There are 2 cafes on the platforms and a Wh smiths, along with toilets and waiting rooms, also on one of the platforms is a plaque in honor of a vc winner. The trains go to various parts of England and Wales, to the East of England, West of England, London and Greater Manchester and beyond. Always friendly, pleasant and helpful staff. A great railway station.
