This forest covers more than 10,000 acres from Hendersonville to Brevard, North Carolina.
Parking at Hooker Falls Access we were able to see 3 waterfalls in 2.5 hours of hiking. We started by walking up the Triple Falls trail, down the steps to the top of the second tier of Triple Halls (which was fantastic), then continuing on along the river via the High Falls trail to the base of High Falls (even more spectacular). We returned to the parking area via the same trail, and took the short Hooker Falls trail to a nice swimming hole. Fantastic morning with a huge payoff for 4.5 miles of hiking. Get there before 9 am if going on a weekend and you'll enjoy the beauty before the crowds descend (as well parking near the trial head).

I did the boys 2 week camp about 20 years ago. As i have grown older, it remains one of my fondest memories. I gained so much knowledge, confidence, and respect for others at Turtle Island. It is an experience, that I think, every young man should have. Most of my best attributes and skills in life were born here.

The Valle Crucis Community Park is a nonprofit organization. We depend on visitors like you: 80% of our operating budget comes from donations. The suggested donation is $2 per day. You can donate in the Welcome Center or in donation boxes located around the park. We offer a 1-mile paved path for walking, jogging, biking, or skating, as well as playground areas for children and lots of open space for sports, yard games, or a nap in the sunshine. The Watauga River runs the length of the park and offers incredible fly-fishing as well as a perfect place for little ones to get their feet wet. There are two large covered picnic shelters in the park, as well as several picnic tables. Shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis unless they have been reserved in advance. Reservations are required for parties of 15 or more. Leashed dogs are welcome.
This is one of our favorite places to go to walk our dogs. There is a leash law, so if you go with your pooch, please keep him or her on a leash. If you should forget your own poop bags, there are some stations throughout the park with some available for you to use if Fido has to go #2. There are restrooms for people, too. There is a nice playground for kids, and a flat mostly concreted path that makes a figure 8 in the park. Beside many of the trees you will see metal stands, and if you open them you will find information about that particular type of tree. People trout fish in the Watagua river (Fishing license required) and kids and adults wade in the river as well. There are also pavilions and BBQ grills to use.

Morganton’s greenway is a wonderful stretch of paved walking/biking trail that runs along the river for several miles. It passes through shady and sunny areas, with gently curves and slight rises that make for an interesting stroll. There are several different places to park and gain access to the trail, most of which are also near playgrounds or shopping areas, and all of them are free. It was one of the many amenities that drew us to the community, and it is well used by all ages - safe and fun!

Come to the foothills of the blue ridge mountains and meet our herd of Angora Goats. At Cherry Mountain Farm you will learn about the history of this beautiful breed and their Mohair fiber. You can give them treats of peanuts and animal crackers and enjoy their comical antics. Come spend the day or starting in May spend the weekend at our Airbnb there is lots to see at the Goat Farm.
This is a must see if you are in the area of Chestnut Forge & Furniture at Cherry Mountain Farm. They have an awesome market with great to gift ideas. They do custom metal work and design, truly amazing to see the high level of craftsmanship. But the favorite part for my 4 and 1 year old, was their Goat Farm. The kids loved seeing the goats, farm dogs, cats, big farm tractor and horses. They are still talking about it over a month later. This is an absolute must go to if you are looking for a fun activity for your kids.

Grandfather Mountain’s pristine scenery and sweeping vistas rejuvenate mind and spirit. At an elevation of 5,946 feet, Grandfather is recognized as one of the world’s most diverse nature preserves. Be exhilarated by the altitude and panoramic views from the Mile High Swinging Bridge; stand eye-to-eye with bears, cougars and otters in natural habitats. Dine in the restaurant or find a scenic picnic spot, browse the nature museum, wander the trails, go behind the scenes of the animal habitats, visit with knowledgeable naturalists, and stop for a treat at the fudge shop. Fill your day with family memories at place where wonders never cease.
There is a $22.00 entry fee (per person) to enter Grandfather Mountain park but there is plenty to do when there so think this is good value for money. There are picnic areas, stunning vistas, hiking trails, wildlife habitats with multiple animals, and the Swinging Bridge so more than enough to keep you entertained for most of the day! We stopped first at the wildlife habitat and while I do have a problem with animals being kept in enclosures I understand the reasons for doing it and it was great to see bears and eagles in close proximity. The staff do talks at various points during the day and they were really friendly and informative so its worth timing your visit to make the most of each of the talks. At the top of the mountain is the amazing swinging bridge which is accessible for everyone as there are some steps but there is also a lift for the less able and the views from the bridge are fantastic. There are also numerous hiking trails (which we didn't have time to explore) but all in all this is a great value experience!

Clean, well-maintained, easy 1/4 mile hike to a beautiful waterfall. $5 each adult, $1 for 12 years and under - they do take credit cards. Restroom on site, picnic tables and benches throughtout. Stairs and uneven stone path. Not suitable for stroller or wheelchair.
